Mr Angus Cameron has been reelected Chairman of Committees in the Assembly. SHIPPING. □Received March 18, at 1.5 a.m.l Arrived—W akatipu. Sailed—Te Anau. AFFAIRS IN TONGA, The steamer Lubeck arrived from Tonga, bringing news that Eing George has prohibited the Rev Mr Moulton from holding services. He also closed the College, and 750 Wesleyans have gone over to the Free Church, fifty being sent to Fiji and Mallicola, one of the new Hebrides Islands. Miss Baker and young Baker are recovering from their injuries, and will shortly visit Sydney. It is stated that there is a scarcity of provisions in the island. THE ELECTIONS IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA. ADELAIDE. March 17. The general election for the new Parliament has commenced. Mr Downes, Premier, and Mr Howe, Minister of Lands, have been returned without opposition. [Received March 18. at 1.15 a.m.] THE SUGAR CROP.
The Messageries Maritime’s Salazie arrived to-day. She brings the following news from Mauritius dated March 3 : —Abundant rain has fallen throughout the entire Island. The new crop of sugar has much improved. No clearances for New Zealand are reported. The total stock of sugar in the Island is 45,450 tons, the exports for the month being 2672 tons.
