Lyttelton Times Office, Thursday Evening. LOCAL MARKETS. Messrs H. Matson and Co. report on the 1 ive Stock Markets, &c„ for the week ending Thursday, March 17ch, 1887, as follows: For yesterday’s Addington Market nn eio?p-ti-naily large entry of sheep mid pigs u.une to' band, both tat and store cattle being also fairly well represented. With fat sheep of all classes i he yards were simply crammed, and us may bo supposed there wes no lack of choice iu the matter of quality, although, os of late, second rats bite represented a large share of the total numbers. On (he other hand there was sufficient good mutton to meet both local requirements uua the moderate demand that existed for freezing, hut the operations if the two classes of buyers referred to, for the best and medium lines of'mutton, together with those o' the boiling down reprosen'atives lor Inferior lines, enabled a clearance 10 he mide of pretty well every lot. Considering the huge entry, however, and when taken into comparison with the prices us ruling of late, we look upon the day’s sole im exhibiting a fairly healthy tone, although ony era certainly had the advantage of any little Change there might have been n values, this remark applying to all descriptions of mutton Wo quote good cross-bred wotliora up to about lid per ib, average quality a shade below, good merino and maiden ewes to lid, aged cross-hreds and inferior merinos to Id. ui\ sooonnt of Messrs Hcnderscn and M•Heath, wesoM gtme very well grazed 2-tootbsof mixed texes, at 8s to 83 3d, cross-bred ewes at Os 3d; .account Mr P. We quote good average beef, suitable for the trade, up -to I6s 6d to 18s per XOOlbj light and tooond rate quality to 14s. On Recount, of Mr John G. In stores the 'business transacted was of a somewhat nominal character, comparatively taw of the lines under offer . changing • hands. In dairy cows, however, there was a better enquiry, and any good promising cows, either springers or those recently calved, met with a demnndat prices from. *l6 to £7 10a, medium classes to £5. The entry of pigs was an especially heavy one, the largest in fact of the season, over 6CO being .penned. Owing to‘the protracted nature of the sheep sale, the auction of pigs was rather late in commencing and as most of the buyers for stubbling purposes have, in a great measure, secured what they require, trade wao not as brisk yesterday as it has been for several weeks past, Considering this,‘together with the fact of the heavy snpply, the sale parsed off quite as well as was expected, prices generally showing a drop of shout 2s per bead nil round. WeoL, sheepskins, Hides and Tallow.— On Thursday, at the Canterbury Wool Store;, we held onr uenal weekly auction of the above, submitting a.large entry to a full attendance of the trade. Good competition resulted in tvary lot being disposed ol at an advance on late rates. Onr sales for the week comprised'slos sheepskins. 80 ox hides and c i Bakins, 78 bags and packages of rough fat and t'dlo w, also several hags of wool, which realised the following prices:—butchers’ oress-breds. Is 101, 2h, 2b, Id, 2s 3d, 3a 6d, 2a Bd, 2s 9d, 2j 10d, 3a to 3s 2d each; butchers’ merinos, is Id, IsSd, Is Pd, is 7d, Is 8d to ls-9d each; lambskins. We noticed a marked improvement in the condition’of the skins sent forward for this week’s auction, and we feel sure that the bnyera appreciated the same, giving au advance on lines that have teen well saved and tha trotters removed. Bough Pat and Tallow.— borne really good consignments to hand, which realised from Id, HJ, lid to 1 2<i per ih. Very inferior tallow, 10s per cwt. Hides at late rates.

Cabtkbbubt Horse Market.—At Tattersall’s ou Saturday last our entries for the day’s sale comprised about 100 horses of all descriptions,.but the majority of the--, wore of alight description. In farm horses between 20 and SO were catalogued, as also some sight or ton unbroken three and four-year-wlds of tbe same class, hut we regret that we arc unable to record much improvement iu trade for this or any other description of stock. There are occasional buyers it Is true for a few plough horses, hut tbe supply is much in excess of the demand, and this, of course, prevents any revival in the way of prices. In unbroken threo-year-olds we placed a very useful filly at £2O; lighter sorts, suitable lor spring cart or tram work, ot £lO to £l2; unbroken hacks to £8 and £lO. A limited number of broken horses suitable for ploughing Ac., sold at ifrom £l2 to £l7 ; aged sorts, £7 to £10; the better class of hookß tip to £l9los (or a somewhat superior an’ina), ordinary descnpt.ons £lO to £l2; inferior hacks, £4 upwards. i.EESTON Yards.—On Friday, March 11, the usual fortnightly sale was held at these yards. The Nkw Zealand Loan and Meiicartii.e Agency Company, Limited, report, oh the live stock markets for the week ending March !?: Totals yarded at Canterbury Kaleyards, Addington, March 16 - Sheep; 12,557; cattle, 409; pigs, 609. Fat Sheen. —Every available pen was filled, and the demand was again almost entirely' confined to the wants of the local trade, and operators for boiling down. Here and there nn exceptionally good lot drew the attention cf exporters, either tor immediate or future use, hht this was quite the exception and the abnormally heavy supply had to be disposed of as stated above. The result was naturally a dull sale, with little or no alteration in prices. In fact, any change perceptible was tor the worse, values having rather a downward tendency.

The large entry, of course, included a considerable variety? but the bulk was composed of medium and inferior quality, chiefly aged cross-bred ewes, while there was hardly a pen of really good merino wethers in the yards. We easily toppad_ the market at 10s for a consignment of grand halfbred wethers, a ooount Dienlenant-Colrmel 1 osswill, of Highfleld, we sold quarter-back wethers at 7s 3d to 7d 104 and cross-bred mixed ewes, 6s‘Sa to 7s. Pat Lambs.-Here also the supply was more than equivalent to thedemand, and low values had to bo accepted. Prime fat lambs fetched 5s 6d to 7s, other sorts Bai t0(4a,94 Store Sheep,—This department was heavily stocked, a large proportion being old sheep, only fit for boding down. For these there is but one outlet at prices that scarcely need repeating, but good lots of young oroas-breds, of either sex, are enquired, for by farmers and graziers, and find u market more readily, though at values much in favour of buyers. Aged cross-bred ewes made 2s 3d to 3s; ditto merinos, Is and Is 6d lor any with fair condition, while those direct from the station only realised ltd, a price that, deducting cost of transit and sale charges, can leave very little for the seller. Four-tooth halfbred owes in perfect condition made 6s Id. Pigs.-The supply was even greater than the yards could fairly accommodate, and values had a slightly easier tone. Kaconere made 2Ss and 28s; porkers and well-grown stores, 16a to 225; smaller stores, 8s 6d and 11s; weaners, ss. We sold about 100 at current There was a full yarding of fat cattle^ the *motm being cows and heifers of fair to medium quality, while good bullocks were the exception. Wo sold light-weight heifers, £3 15ato beavy cowß realised np to £7, and medium steers to £6 lie 6d, being 16s to 18s per 1001 b. Second-rate pens were quitted at xueiely nominal values. In tho other pens there was a fair supply; but. the enquiry being limited, not much business was done, any transactions that occurred being on the basis of current rates. ; ‘ . DisiaicT Sales.—During the week,- business at outside centres, now that harvest Ims well.finished, has had an improving tendency, and less c.iffloulty is met with in briuging buyers and sellers in accord with one another.. There was a much larger attendance of buyers than usual, with spirited Biddings, showing a slight improvement in prices, which are as follows Steers, A 5 l6sto£Sss; fat cows end heifers, £3 10s to £7 per head. In the store pens there were some exceedingly nice lines of three-year-old steers, which were passed in unsold, the balance, however, were of the usual nondescript sorts, varying in prices from £llos to £4, accoiding to desciiption. The fat sheep were quite equal to last week's supply, for which from 6s 9a to 10s were the ruling prices.
