A NEW NOVEL. The Proprietorslof THE nANTEEBDKY m HIES HE XIMES Aro able, with much pleasure, to inform their readers that they have purchased the right of first publishing a NEW NOVEL BY A NEW ZEALAND WRITER. ON FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 13th, appeared THE OPENING CHAPTERS OF * A. Singular Ijegacy," DT E, A. LOUGHNAN. It has been with some hesitation that the Proprietors have made up their minds to face the prejudice which undoubtedly exists in New Zealand against the “ Colonial article ” in literature. The sterling merit of “ A Singular Legacy” will, however, quickly explain to its readers how this hesitation was overcome. Mr Loughuan’s position as Editor and Parliamentary Correspondent of the •• Lyttelton Times" is a guarantee as to the stylo in which his novel is written. In addition it is enough to say that “ A Singular Legacy” is a novel of plot ani incident, based on a curious fraud, followed by a deliberate and atrocious crime, and on tba detection and punishment of noth. Over and above the interest excited by its p-ot, the story has the advantage of being entirely free from the vulgarities of stylo and false drawing which repel in so many of the sensational novelettes ot the day. Mr Loughnan’s men and women ore sketched with a light hand, pleasantly hut corraotly, and they talk and move as do men and women in everyday life, A vein of genial good nature runs through the hook which will,-when read, bo admitted to easily surpass anything written by a New Zealander since Mr Farjeou stoniahed his Dunedin friends by hitting the Cnglisfa taste with "Joshua Marvel.*'
