ENTERTAINMENTS, TREATS, &c.
A concert in aid of the treat fund for the Hamstead School (Ashburton) was given on Friday evening in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Ashburton. The hall was crowded. The programme, though homely in many of the items, was such as won the hearts of the audience, many of whom were juvenile, and the applause elicited was deafening. Major Steward, M.H.R., was Chairman, and his happy way of introducing the singers tended greatly to the enjoyment of the evening. A respectable sum will be available for giving the children a treat. An entertainment was held at Annat on Friday evening, the proceeds of which will be devoted to the children’s prize fund. There was a large attendance, and Mr G. A. Keys presided in the chair. Songs were contributed by Mesdames Bowler, Meadows, Tressider, Graham, Fleming, and Ruck, and Messrs Kent, J udd, Bryden, and several comic ditties by Mr Tom Pole, who was loudly encored. Numerous recitations and choruses were given by the school children. Though executed in a manner which reflects the highest credit on their teachers, the number of items in this department might be considerably lessened on another occasion without reducing tbe attractiveness of the entertainment. Two spelling bees — one for adults and the other for school children—were also held, and created a good deal of amusement, the former being won by Miss Bowler and the latter by Miss A. Colthart. A vote of thanks to those who assisted and who provided the refreshi ments for the dance, terminated a very pleasant entertainment; and the floor being cleared dancing was commenced, and kept up till the early morning. Miss Bowler kindly providing the music. A very successful entertainment was given on Friday night by the children attending the Hororata district school. The room was crowded, and in the unavoidable absence of Sir John Hall (who sent an apology), the Rev W. S. Bean was in the chair. Songs, dialogues and recitations were exceedingly well rendered by the scholars, and reflected the greatest possible credit on Mr Carleton and Miss O’Shaughnessy, the master and mistress of the school. Before the National Anthem was sung, the Chairman moved a hearty vote of thanks to the teachers and children, which was carried by acclamation. On Friday evening a concert was held at the schoolroom, Waitohi Flat, in aid of the funds of the Waitohi Flat Public Library. The evening was gloriously fine, and the attendance was very large. The concert was in all respects most successful, a very varied and choice programme being rendered in a very pleasing manner. The principal performers were ladies and gentlemen from Temuka, and they received most hearty thanks for their kindly services.
