SHEFFIELD CLUB. Second Day.—Friday, July 30. The above Club brought their meeting lo a conclusion to-day. A start was made on the Pine Grove Estate of Mr G. Rutherford. Hares were plentiful, but shy, and in most instances rose at too great a distance to allow of a slip. Lucifer and Figaro were favoured with three long no-courses, before they got in sufficient to justify Mr Cresswell in awarding the palm to either of them. Lucifer was quite knocked out of time, and Figaro wa3 a solo performer, barring the lead and first turn. Star of the South was comparatively fresh when she met the Derby winner, and just beat him in a short course. Fair Helene won the puppy event in good style, although she was favoured in getting a flying hare for her course against Made-

line, as<Bhedied away, but the* hare was too speedy for the latter bitch to use to any extent. Mr J. Cresswell gave every satisfaction as Judge, never a complaint being. made. Mr Willis was successful with the slips, except in the final for the Puppies, when he delivered his charges a bit on the cross. At the conclusion of the sport Mr C. M'Causland made a few remarks, , in the course of which he specially eulogised Mr Cresswell for the satisfactory manner in I which he had judged for the Club ab their last two meetings. Three cheers were then given for Messrs Rutherford, Minchin, Cresswell and Willis. Appended are results : MALVEEN CUP, for all ogee, at 3gs each. Seven entries. Winner, JEI3 10b j runner up, £6 63. Figaro beat Lucifer Star of the South beat First Lord Final. Mr J. Tweedy's w blk b Star of the South, by Bpring Topsy, beat Mr M. J>ig by'a blk w d Jfigaro, by Champagne Charlie —Marigold. After three long no-courses, which could not be judged, Figaro and Lucifer were delivered nicely on to a good hare. The Plate winner bounded away, but the black was gradually drawing up as puss was neared, and Lucifer was only a couple to the good when he turned. He was of no further assistance to Figaro, who ran a splendid course, handling his game in that workman-like manner which is peculiar to himself, and he finally bagged the hare after a long course. First Ties. —Star of the South and First Lord had a great tussle for possession,. Star, contrary to general expectation, securing first turn by two lengths. She carefully excluded her opponent in the early part of the course, and it 1 looked like an easy victory for the bitch, but the son of Champagne Charlie came wonderfully at the latter end of the course, and had narrowed Star's large majority down to a couple of points when puss escaped. First Lord's performance as a sticker was very meritorious, considering that he was pitted against such a renowned stayer as Star of the South. .Final.—Figaro looked very much the worse for wear when he was placed in slips for the final, and it seemed almost a moral for Star of the South. A " Soho" was soon found, and the pair was sent on their journey well together. Star was soon well ahead; but the dog was gaining inch by inch as the hare was neared. The bitch, however, maintained her lead, and was a couple to the good when she turned. Quick as lightning the dog swung round, took second and placed the bitch. Figaro shot in for next, and Star took one. The hare was breaking for the fence and made a rush to set through. He made a mistake, however, and Figaro nailed him, but as the kill was not one of merit the bitch was left a winner. THE J-BWELLEBS' PLATE, for puppies, at2ga e»ch. Ten entries. Winder £8 9s, with a trophy presented by Mr W. White; runner-up, «6j third dog, £3 oa. Fair Helene beat Madeline Fenella beat JBockwood 11. Highland Mary a bye.' FINAL Mr I>. M. Bobs' w f b Fair Helene, by Hurlingham —Harmony, beat Mr T. Alexander'a w f b Highland Mary, by Champagne Charlie—Bonnie Bcotiand, Fenefii. being drawn injured. _ First Ties.—-After a no-course, Fair Helene led. vMadeline a long stretch to a flying hare, and piclkj&ab two. ,_ They then exchanged twice, and"iZsJene died off a bit, the long race up having'JTCfmped her; Madeline went on in pursuit, but ilJft hare was too fast for her to score much, an*2> Helene was left in a small majority. Fenella was three lengths faster than Rockwood 11., and kept her place for a long time. She always had a bit too much foot for the dog, and it was not till near the end of a gruelling course that he came in at all strongly. Fenella wound up with a clever kill, and was left a big winner. She injured herself somewhat, by striking her head in the act of killing, and was incapacitated from running again. Highland Mary ran a bye. * Final.—Fair Helene got much the best of a cross slip, and followed puss through the fence first. She kept her place for four on the road, and was the best for some time in the second paddock. Highland Mary was evidently staying the best, and eventually gave Helene the go-bye, but she«had not time to reverse the balance of the points, and Highwayman's sister was returned the winner. Intending nominators are again reminded that entries for the Plumpton Cup at sgs, August Cup at 3gs, and Sapling Stakes at 3gs, close with the Secretary, at the Empire Hotel, at 9 o'clock this evening. FOOTBALL. There was a largely attended meeting of the Canterbury Rugby Union at the Commercial Hotel last evening, Mr W. V. Millton in the chair.
