SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

METHYEN. The usual monthly meeting of this Committee was held on Tuesday evening; pregent—Messrs E. Patton (Chairman), Hibbs, Quinn, Morgan, V. Eouse, and M. William. The master’s report was read, showing that the attendance for the last month was:—On roll: Boys, 45; girls, 89; total, 84. Average attendance : Boys, 34 8; girls, 291; total, 63’9. Highest number present: Boys, 39; girls, 32; total, 71, and that the average attendance for the quarter ending June 30 last was: Boys, 32 2; girls, 29 7. Highest attendance : Boys, 39; girls, 32; total, 71. A letter was received from the Board of Education in reply to an application' from the Committee for a swing, stating that the Board only supplied the usual gymnastic apparatus. Eesolved —"That the Committee purchase a giant stride swing for the use of the scholars." After passing accounts and. transacting some routine business the Committee adjourned. HEATHCOTE VALLEY. A meeting of this Committee was held on July 24; present Messrs Perkins (Chairman), M’Dowell, Sandford, Sykes, and Weir. Correspondence was received and dealt with: From the Board of Education—(l) stating that there were no funds available for planting, and that they considered the work should be done by local effort, also stating where trees might be obtained; (2) that the report on gymnasium had been referred to the drill instructor. Eeports were received from Messrs Collins and giving details, re gymnastic apparatus and several other deficiencies. Correspondence from the master was, referred to Messrs Sandford and Sykes,.who were elected as a Visiting Committee, the Chairman and Secretary to act ex officio, to promote practical interest in the work of the school, and promptly bring under the notice of parents the consequences attendant Upon irregular attendance. It was suggested that the teacher in charge of each standard should be supplied 1 with forms for the purpose of giving periodical reports on the conduct, home lessons, progress, and attendance of each scholar connected with the school. The

Conmuttee decided to consider this suggestion at its next meeting. Receipts (inoludf ing private donations) for the half-year ending June 30, 1886, were reported at £IBB 7s 3id, and the expenditure .£lßl 18s 4d. ■
