THE WRECK OF THE SHIP LYTTELTON. The contractors for raising the Lyttelton ore now strengthening the wooden caisson that is to be placed over the main hatch. Looking at the timber that is now being used, some of it 14in by 7in, gives some idea of tho force of the waves that have to be resisted. When this caisson is placed over the main hatch, it is to be kept in its place by long soars (parts of the top-masts of the Lyttelton) being lashed to it. and these spars being twitched to the vessel by what is called a Spanish windlass. The fore hatch is to be. stopped with a box filled with a ton of cement. This box is made of the strongest 2in timber, 2ft fiiu deep, and abont 18in less in diameter at the b ittom than the top. Two straps of iron. Sin by 3in, go xonnd three sides, and terminate in four hooks, which will catch on to the sides of the combing e( the hatch, and so the (ore-bold - will be completely sealed np. The pumping. is all to be done out of the main hatch. The diver went down a short time since, and had a good look round the inside of the vessel, but he could discover no hole or anything to indicate the eause of her sinking. :. He found the mutton lying in the same .'position as it was when stowed, but two or three Dales of wool hod fallen down into the bold. the diver was amongst the sheep, those on deck .could!' feel that he was stirring thorn up with his foot, as there was rather an ruruleasant smell. On Monday or Tuesday next everything should be ready tor another trial to fix the caisson over the hatch andisommenoepumpmg. SHIPPING TELEGRAMS.! , r ,:". r Ir - AUCKLAND, JtjlV 39.
