THE PLEASURES OF STUDY.

The love of reading enables a man to exchange the most wearisome hours of his life for hours of delight If the subject matter be well chosen it is impossible to over-estimate the value of the time so spent. Every man mast choose for himself, and abide the result of his choice; but he should never forget that there is an unfailing supply of the best kind of literature always available in the newspapers descriptive of the sorrows and sufferings averted from poor humanity by the use of St Jacobs Oil. A WRINKLE WORTH HAYING. Broiled Beef, Mushrooms, and Potatoes. —Wipe two or three dozen mushrooms, free them from grit with a piece of flannel and salt; put them in a stewpan with loz butter, seasoning, and ketchup; stir over the fire until the mushrooms are quite done, when pour them in the middle of a wall of mashed potatoes browned; then place round the potatoes slices of cold roast beef, nicely broiled, over a clear fire; in cooking the mushrooms the ketchup may be dispensed with if there is sufficient gravy. To insure the really delicious flavour of this dish, the instructions given must be accurately followed. The same warning applies with equal force, to the use of St Jacobs Oil, for the compiler of the receipt as well as the Saint knew exactly what precautions were necessary in each case to make it a dead sure thing that the public should reap the greatest advantage from their respective discoveries.
