THE NEW HEBRIDES QUESTION.
[Pbb Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Mat 20. The following were the telegrams read by the Premier in the House this evening:— “ The Premier of New Zealand to the Premier of Victoria — “ Have you received any cablegrams from, your Agent-General, contradicting or denying Beater’s telegram that England has refused to consent to the cession of the New Hebrides ?” « May 19,1886. “ To the Hon B. Stout, Wellington, •'Be New Hebrides.—No telegram has been received modifying or denying Beuter. On the contrary, the telegraphic advices from our Agent-General are distinctly confirmatory. "J. C. Thohas “ (Jn the absence of the Premier). « To the Hon the Premier, Wellington, New Zealand.” The following is the telegram from the Agent-General:— " London, May 19. "I had a long conversation with the Secretary of State for the Colonies, of a very satisfactory character. He stated that Her Majesty’s Government adhered to the pledge to the Colonies, and had so informed the French Ambassador from the first. The French proposals were too important to decline (decide upon ?) without direct reference to the Colonies. The French Ambassador is now privately informed that there is no prospect of England assenting. The official reply to him will await the receipt of the official despatches from the Colonies.
