THE GLEN-ITI INSTITUTE.

This very handsome stone building, which was erected at a cost of £l5O, by Mr E. T. Rhodes, and by him presented to the inhabitants of the District, was opened on Tuesday evening. In connection with the opening, a discourse was given by the Rev G. Barclay. A concert followed, and dancing concluded the evening. His Worship, the Mayor of Timaru (Mr John Jackson) presided. The Rev G. Barclay gave an account of the different theories promulgated concerning the origin of language, and gave a short history of literature. A concert afterwards took place, and was highly successful, and the dance which followed was equally so. A number of books have been presented

by Messrs Ballantyne, Perry, Godby, Lindsay, and: others, to form the nucleus of a library.
