VILLAGE SETTLEMENT.
On Friday, the Commissioner of Crown Lands was in attendance at the Town Hall, South Eakaia, to receive applications for the purchase of the unsold sections in the village settlement, only those who heM five acres or less originally to apply, it was expected, after the remarks made by Mr Ballance on his visit here, that the price of land would he reduced to £5 an acre. However, the original .£lO per acre was made the upset price. The land not put up to auction, but where more than one party applied for the same section, lots were drawn for choice. All the sections with the exception of two were disposed of. The following is the result of the sale:—
The Commissioner intimated that with regard to three of the applications, they were only granted subject to the Minister’s approval, as the applicants held slightly over five acres originally.
