FIRES.
On Saturday night the slaughter yards of Mr Richard Lancaster, butcher, Ashburton, were destroyed by fire. The yards are situated in the river-bed, and the main building in connection with them is of brick. They were constructed at considerable expense, and as the proprietor does an extensive business, he had a good deal of valuable machinery on the premises. The place was reduced to ashes very soon, being away down in the river-bed, out of the ready reach of the fire brigades. It was some time after the fire was discovered before an alarm could be given, and the engine brought down to the scene. The place was insured, but to what amount, or in what office, had not been ascertained •when our reporter telegraphed last night. This is the second time the same premises have been burned. [Per Press Associatiok.J KUKUHIA, Apeil 18. A cheese factory between Hamilton and Ohaupo was destroyed by fire at one o'clock this morning. The manager's house and contents were destroyed. There were 12 tons of cheese in the factory at the time. The buildings, machinery and cottage were insured in the National for £9OO. tt. is not known yet whether the cheese, which was valued at £6OO was insured. The premises of George Milsom, Nelson street, used as a dressmaker's establishment by Miss Tyler, has been partly burned. The stock was destroyed. The building was insured for .£2OO in the South British, and the stock for .£IBO in the Colonial. The damage is £250.
