THE NEW AGRICULTURAL SHOW GROUNDS.
A special meeting of the General Committee of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held at 2 p.m. yesterday for the purpose of considering: the plans of the arrangements of the new Show Grounds, as amended by the sub-Com-mittee to, which they! were: submitted at a former meeting of the Committee. The first, the one nearest town, is to be for the admission of machinery and pigs; the centre one for the public, and the third will admit to a fenced road leading to the sheep and cattle pens. Between this road and the boundary-fence is a belt of plantation. The sheep pens, which will be situated nearest the entrance to the road, are to be 450 in number, arranged in three divisions, each consisting of four rows of double pens. They are to be open to the sky, though there is some intention of covering them in at a future time. Following the course of the road along the boundary-fence, the cattle pens will be reached next—those intended for fat cattle being first in order. These last will be 30 in number, and are to be open; those for the accommodation of shorthorns and other breeds will number 170, and are to be covered in. The pens are to be arranged in double rows. A large com store, 30ft by 20ft, built against the fence, will be situated between the cattle pens and horse stalls. There will be 160 of the latter, all covered in, and, in addition, 40 loose boxes, built against the boundary fence. At the end of the range of horse stalls, and at the northern end of the ground, are to be 100 pig pens, covered in. The gate on the right-hand side of the entrance will give access to a section of about five acres in extent, intended for the display of machinery, implements, and carriages. In this part of the grounds is to be erected a large shed for New Zealand manufactures and produce. It will be 118£t in length fey 50ft wide, and will be surrounded by a 12ft verandah, for the exhibition of cooking ranges and other articles liable to be injured by exposure to the weather. Behind this shed will come twb refreshment booths, one for luncheons 120 ft long by 50ft wide. A band rotunda will stand between them. At some future time a grand stand, to accommodate 1000 people, will be erected bn the eastern side of the trotting track, where it will be sheltered from the prevailing winds, and will give a view of the whole ground. Arrangements for a complete water supply will be made.
