M'Gee, who was in command of the Union Company’s s.s. Waihora when she struck on the uncharted rock in Banks’ Straits, on her passage from New Zealand, via. Hdhort, has made arrangements to remain on shore. Before the accident occurred, it was well-known amongst his circle of acquaintances that he intended to relinquish the -seafaring life, and enter into business at Sydney. ■His connection with the steamer was to have ceased on her arrival at Sydney after leaving here, hut in the meantime the accident upset, for a time,- all Arrangements. Having done all that he could for the steamer in her difficulty, and seen her in a fair way of being afloat again, be has sent in his resignation to the Directors, and an intimation that he intends settling on shore, os was previously understood. It is a rigid rule in the Union Company’s service, and one that has been on several occasions ■strictly enforced, that when an accident of the •description which happened to the Waihora occurs, the master has no alternative but to resign or be •dismissed.
