GROUNDING OF THE EAKAIA, With regard to the grounding of the New Zealand Shipping Company’s Eakaia in the Victoria Channel, leading to the Upper Harbour at Dunedin, the other day, we understand that the explanation of the mishap is simple enough. At the time the vessel took the ground she was a considerable distance out of the right channel, and on the hank towards Eavenshourne. She hud s .fell passed the shallowest part of the fairway and left it nearly a mile astern, and in the true channel opposite the point where she stuck fast, where the vessel should have been, there are 18 to 20ft of water at low tide. As the Eakaia was only drawing 13ft 6in at the moment there was no necessity for her to take the ground, indeed she came to grief opposite one of the deepest parts. The channel, however, is only dredged to its full depth for a width of 120 ft, so that it is an easy matter for a ship f lightly down by the head, os the Eakaia was at the time, and with a stiff breeze behind her, to get out of it, as her steering under those circumstances is a matter of some difficulty.
