THE STRATFORD RELIEF FUND.
NEW PLYMOUTH, Jan. 30. The bush settlers’ Relief Committee met yesterday, when the New Plymouth delegates, who had met the Hawera delegates, reported that all claims likely to be made had been sent in, and had been examined by them. They recommended that assistance be distributed from a common fund by the delegates, A long discussion ensued, when Mr Samuel, M.H.R., protested strongly against the fund whicu was subscribed for the relief of the destitute being given in proportion to the claims of each sufferer by the fire, as the list of names contained a large number of thoroughly well-to-do settlers. He said the subscribers to the fund never expected such men to put in claims. Mr. Bauchope, Hon Secretary to the delegates, stated that there were very few cases of positive hardship; in fact, he could not say that there were more than six families who were really destitute. The Committee passed a resolution, requesting the joint delegates to distribute the relief fund, The° New Plymouth subscriptions have reached .£978, and Hawera £420. Donations are still coming in to both lists.
