THE FREETRADE PHANTASY.
TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —Could you, without doing' violence to your own sense of duty and the obligations under which you may rest to the great bulk of the community, kindly allow the . “ Preetrade” and “Protectionist” topic to drop out of your columns, for a while at any rate, in order to permit some of your correspondents to cool down and “ gather their brains ” again. One, who, like myself, has lived to witness the absolute -success of principles advocated years ago in the now great and prosperous Colony of South-eastern Australia, cannot but regard the laboured and strained productions of your correspondent, W. Chrystall, as the outcome of a desire to prop up a theory which already, under practical demonstration, has proved, in the experience of young communities (such as our "Own) to be not only detrimental to progress, but actually disastrous in its results. —I am, &c., VICTORIAN.
