TRAMWAY THROUGH LATIMER SQUARE.

[ TO THE EDITOR. f Sib, —Another and very decided step has > [ been taken by the City Council in the mati ter of the Cemetery Tramway. They have decided on the route, and that that route should be through Latimer square. All doubt, therefore, which existed on this part of the subject relative to the Council's intention is removed, and we have now te\ deal with facts. The next question is, Will the citizens tolerate the destruction. .of the square ? ITor, without mincing matters, this is the equivalent of running a tram line right through it. It appears Ito me that they will not. And further, I i maintain that the City Council, as a body, > ; does not rightly possess the power t» plough this public square through; neither was it contemplated by any Act of Parliament, nor by the citizens, that such extraordinary power should be placed in the h'ands of a few individuals as to remove for ever one of the City Recreation Reserves. Even did they possess this extent of power, it would still be an act of justice to have the voice of the people on so important a question, before putting the work into execution. Happily it is not too late to have recourse to this \ yet. I would therefore suggest to" the Mayor to call a public meeting, and thereiby neutralise any imputation that unkind | persons may make against the guiding motives of the members of the Council in 'their decision. Should the Mayor ignore ithe suggestion, then it behoves the citizens 'to call a public meeting as soon as pos- ' sible ; of the expenses of such meeting, I am ready to bear a share. Relying confidently on the fact that the majority of the citizens are not so indifferent to the fate of the uity as te , passively allow such a flagrant act to be ; perpetrated with impunity, more especially 4 ,as theie is no necessity for it, as the Coun- % cil have a choice of routes, each one equal 3 "So, if not better than that decided on, —I g lam, &c, ' r? I CITIZEN. $
