SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.

NEW BRIGHTON BEACH JOCKEY CLUB. A -well-attended meeting of this Club was held, last night, at Patterson's New Brighton Hotel, Mr Colthurst Palairet in the chair. It was resolved to alter the date on which the races are to be held, and it was unanimously decided that the annual race meeting on the beach take place on Thursday, May 7. The Programme Committee submitted a bill-of-fare for the meeting, which will be found advertised in another column. It will be seen that the programme has been drawn up on a most liberal scale, which certainly should ensure a good meeting. Altogether 115 sovs will be given in added money, distributed among the following events : —Pony Eaee of 10 sovs, Welter Handicap of 15 sovs, Maiden Trot of 15 sovs, Jockey Club Handicap of 30 sovs, Ladies' Bracelet of 20 sovs, Open Handicap Trot of 25 sovs, and Novel Race of 10 sovs. Nominations for the handicaps close on Saturday, April 25, and general entry day is Monday, May 4. A letter was read from the New Brighton Racing Club, refusing to give any support to the races to be held on the beach, and a resolution was passed, expressing surprise at their refusal. A vote of thanks to the Chairman brought the meeting to a close.

There was a large muster. Amongst those present were Messrs G. B. Starky (Master) on Sefton, O. Thomson on Gladiator, P. Lance on The Masher, R. Parsons (Whip) on Sir Peter, Downes on Mahdi, G. Coleman on Silvertail, D. M'Kay on Glengarry, J. Ingram on Pilgrim, and others. The ladies were present in strong force, several of them who were well mounted being in at the death. The day was beautifully fine, but the scent was not very good. After the first run, an adjournment was made to Mr Starky's residence, where a substantial lunch was provided in the Master's usual liberal manner. After partaking of the good things provided, the word to mount was given, and another good run was the result. At the start, a hare was soon found, close to the stables, and ran away to the hills, giving the ladies a capital view of the sport. " After running her about an hour with no one near them, in some turnip land they killed. After lunch another hare was found in the creek, which afforded a smart turn over the grass, but, getting into the bed of the creek, she was lost on Gray's road. A mo3t enjoyable day was spent, and, given suitable weather, many good runs will be the result, and will, no doubt, be witnessed and taken part in by a large number of the inhabitants of the district. The hounds will be regularly hunted during the season, of which due notice will be published.

BENEFIT CRICKET MATCH. The cricket match between Owners and Bookmakers on the one side and Jockeys and Trainers on the other, took place at. Hagley Park yesterday, the weather being simply glorious, and the pitch in excellent condition. The match, as previously noted, was in aid of the injured jockey Mitchell; and a bag was held at the gate to receive donations, a fair sum of money being collected. The Owners and Bookmakers went in first, but were soon disposed of for the small score of 46. The Jockeys and Trainers found it an easy task to top their opponents' score, and, when the last wicket had fallen, t found themselves 74 runs to the good. Mason, who hit very hard for his runs, made a very successful d6but, it being the first time he had ever played in a cricket match. In their second innings the Owners and Bookmakers fared much better, and totted up 139. The last man being out just before time, the Jockeys and Trainers had no opportunity of rubbing off the runs. Forward only gave one chance in his innings, which included some very good hits to leg. The following are the scores:—
