The Oamaru Mail says:—lt now appears probable that Oamaru will ere long obtain the very material benefit of being included among the ports of call of the Union Company's intercolonial trading steamers. For some time efforts have been made to induce the Company to send their Sydney traders here ; but the reply has always been that -the port charges were disproportionate to the amount of trade that might be obtained. The Harbour Board, however, met this difficulty in a very business-like manner, and we have the announcement that, should sufficient inducement offer, the steamship Hauroto will call here on Friday to load with horses and other cargo for Sydney. The venture, has, unfortunately, been made at a bad time, for a very large number of •horse 3 and cattle, besides other cargo, has already been promised to the steamship Indus, and it is possible that for this reason the first effort to have Oamaru included in the ports of call of the large Sydney line of steamers may fall through. Much ■will, however, depend upon shippers, and we hope they will make an effort to secure what must prove a great source of benefit to the district if the present venture proves successful. It will he remembered that a few years back a new iron steamer, when being launched in the Clyde, capsized and drowned nearly two hundred people. She was subsequently raised, and in order to conceal her identity had her iname changed to the Bose, but the change in name seemed to have hut small effect on her luck, for she afterwards sank in Portrush Harbour with most of her people. The second catastrophe should have concluded her career as a vessel, but she was again raised, and her next adventure was tonra ashore on Big Cumbrae, hut she was got off somehow, and after a few years came out again under the very pretty name of lanthe. On Dec. 13, however, when returning from Smyrna with a load of currants, she stuck on the Mull of Galloway, but got off in halfian hour. Then she fell in with a gale of wind, sprang a leak, and hove up for Belfast, where Bhe was beached to prevent sinking. After such a career it will be necessary to change her name again before she can make a start with any degree of confidence.
