GERALDINE AUTUMN MEETING. We learn from our Geraldine correspondent that in consequence of the Autumn Meeting of the Ashburton Racing Club taking place on the same days as those proposed by the local Club, the latter have decided to postpone their Autumn races till May 5 and 6 next, nominations for same being received on March 19. Of course the nominations received for the original dates will held good for the postponed 'meeting, or the foes will be returned should the owners of horses already nominated desire to retire from the same. THE DUNEDLN MEETING. [feom oue own cobrespondent.J DUNEDIN, Feb. 25. The weather is still unsettled, but the rain is holding off, and as the glass is rising there is reasonable prospect of a fine day to-morrow. The town is full of visitors.
Vanguard hardened this morning to 6 to 4, and the best judges consider him a certainty for the Cup. In my opinion it is an open race, but I cannot shut my eyes to the fact that ' the New Zealand Cup winner is in magnificent fettle, and i 3 evidently meant to win. lady Emma is rumoured to have disappointed the stable in her gallop yesterday afternoon, but the particulars to hand are very contradictory. It is a fact, however, that the mare is appreciably easier in the market. In my opinion Vanguard will win, with Sou'-wester and Lady Emma close up. Eocket will be heavily backed by country folk for the Hurdles; and I think he will beat Trapper, whose fencing for the last day or two has not been of the best order. For the Champagne Stakes I fancy Stoneyhurst; for the Publican's, Taiaroa ; Selling Kace, Don Jose; Maiden, Matanaka; Stewards' Purse, Mr Stead's declaration. [Per Press Association.] The following are the final acceptances for the CHAMPAGNE STAKES. The entries are numerous, and as all banks and most of the principal business houses intend to close, the day will be a semi-holiday. Trams and coaches give convenient access to the scene of the regatta, and, as the weather promises to be fine, there will probably be a large gathering of visitors. The hills afford a convenient " coign of vantage" to overlook the course. The first race starts at 1 p.m., and a special train leaves at noon. The Garrison Band will be in attendance.
