VICTORIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

The preliminary heats of the One-mile Bicycle Championship of Victoria were decided on Jan. 29, at the Warehousemen's Ground, Melbourne. The first heat went to C. Dwyer in 2min 57-Jsec, H. Stokes about 6in away second. In the second heat F. H. Shackelford. finished first in 2min 48sec; H. C. Bagot second. The final heat came off on Jan. 31. Result:— Final Heat. P. H. Shackelford 1 H. Stokes 2 C. Dwyer 3 In the start Shackelford took up the running and was attended closely by Stokes, with Dwyer running dangerously near. Continuing in this order till the race was half over, Dwyer made an effort to pass Stokes, in doing which he fouled his machine, narrowly escaping bringing Stokes down. Shackelford increasing his lead during the last lap won easily, Dwyer coming second with Sfcokes well up. Owing to the foul the second position was given to H. Stokes. Time—2min 53$sec. Ten Miles Championship. P.H.Shackelford 1 H. C. Bagot 2 C. Dwyer 3

F. and H. Stokes also started. At'the completion of the first lap Shackelford spurted to the front, followed by F. Stokes, next in order bekig Bagot, Dwyer, H. Stokes. With the exception of H. Stokes passing Dwyer, the positions remained unchanged up to the completion of the sixth lap. In the seventh lap F. Stokes dropped back and retired from the race, H. Stokes doing the same a, few minutes later. From this out Shackelford drew away from both Bagot and Dwyer, so much so, that before four miles had been completed he overlapped them. Bagot warming up hung on to Shackelford, and was with him when he passed Dwyer for the second time in the third lap of the seventh mile. The final mile was entered upon at a good pace, the distance being completed in 3min 3sec, while the ten miles occupied in all 31min 24f sec.
