WRECK OF A FEENCH MAN-OF-WAR,
Files of the Nio-CaUHonien, which come down to Jan. 21, furnish particulars of the wreck of the French man-of-war Cher, on the south-west coast of New Caledonia. Tt was about nine o'clook in the evening when the vessel struck on the reef, somewhat to the westward of Cape Goulvain. Attempts were made to lighten her, but she rolled so fearfully that tho yard to which the apparatus had been r gged snapped in two. A boat was launched containing seven of the crew, but that went to pieces on the reef, and the men, who were clinging to the coral, with the waves wishing clean over them, were with difficulty rescued by the whaleboat. Presently the mainmast went with a crash over the port side of the' vessel; and this was soon followed by the mizenmast. Two hours afterwards the Cher bojan to fill with water and to hoel over to the larboard. When the ship struck a box of cartridges had been got up on the bridge, and a dczen signalß of distress were fired. The ui«ht seemed to bo endless, and when day dawned it was seen that the whaleboat and the captain's gig were resting on the reef. Gradually the whole of the officers and crew were conveyed in safety to the small island of Contrariety, the captain being the last to leave the wreck. But they had only five small kegs of water and a few tias of biscuits for tho sustenance of 115 shipwrecked mariners. Sunday, the d:vy after the wreck, was spent in endeavouring to save the effects of the crew and some firearms; and ou Monday, the unfortunate men were beginning to suffer severely from hunger and thirst, wheu the Bruat and the Loyalty appeared in sight, and the former vessel took them off. The captain of the Cher is described as having been quite overwhelmed by the anguish of miud which this disaster haß occasioned. Oting to the strong breezes which have been blowing off the coastithas hitherto been found impracticable to effect any salvage from the wreck.
