DEPARTURE OF SIR W. JERVOIS.

[Per Pbess Association.J WELLINGTON, Feb. 24. The Governor, accompanied by Major Eccles, A.D.C., left for Sydney in the steamer Tekapo at 8 o'clock this evening. A Gazette issued this afternoon says that Ms absence from the Colony will jnot exceed a month, and that it is for the purpose of visiting the Governor of Victoria. The Gazette appoints his Honor Chief Justice Sir James Prendergast to be DeputyGovernor during his Excellency's absence. The Deputy-Governor's powers are limited to duties arising under the following Acts: —Fugitive Offenders, Municipal Corporations, Counties, Boad Boards, Town Districts, Lands, Mines, Prisons, Industrial Schools, Public Revenues, Eegidation of Elections, Public "Works, Building Socie- ' ties, Friendly Societies, Industrial Societies, Public Health, Diseased Cattle, Animals Protection and Special Powers and Contracts. The Governor's visit is purely in connection with the defences of Australia.' Major Cautley does not accompany him. Sir William will probably interview Colonel Scratchley with reference to the question of New Guinea, and the latter gentleman therefore will not visit New Zealand.
