CITY COUNCIL.
The City Council held an ordinary meeting last night; present— His Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Ayers, Vincent, River, Reese, Bowman, Hoskmg, Crooks, Prudhoe, H. Bennetts. Lambert, and Lnco. apology. An apology for tho absence of Councillor Louisson was made. medical officer. The ajipointment of a medical officer was postponed till the result of the coming conference is known. ADVERTISING ON FOOTPATHS. The Council resolved fco ;u;,iuu civil tho attention of tho police to a repetition of advertising on tho pavements. FINANCE. The Mavor announced that there was a debtor balance at the bank of £llO9 13s Od The receipts for the previous fortnight wore .A'l4s 2s 7d, and expenditure £lOBl 13s Pd. CORRESPONDENCE. The following letter was road : “Wo are instructed by some inhabitants residing in Worcester street to draw your attention to ‘ the Canterbury Association Ordinance, 1835," by which the streets and squares in the City of Christchurch are set out in the plan annexed to tho Ordinance. By this plan it will bo scon that Worcester street passes directly through Latimer square from east to west. By * The Christchurch Reserves Ordinance, IS7G,’ by which the reserves in Christchurch are transferred to tho City Council of Christchurch, the rights-of-way, streets, Ac., aro reserved. V e therefore beg to ask your Worship aud the Council to take the necessary steps to liave Worcester street opened through the square. “ Williams and Deacon. ’ The letter was referred to the Council’s legal adviser. CITY SURVEYOR’S REPORT.
The following was road; — “i. Tenders were invited for twelve months’ supply of hardware, and the tender of Mr Nasbclski was accepted ; also for oils and colours, and the tender of Messrs Kelsey and Co. was accepted. The above tender's were accepted subject to the approval of the Council. 2. Some necessary repairs, whitewashing, and distempering have been done at the Fire Brigade stations. 3. The flushing tanks are now allowed to stand full of water, to be used for fire prevention purposes, and some of them are doing good service in supplying the dry channels with water by the overflow from the tanks being conducted into them. 4. The channels at the east end of Hawdon’s right-of-way have been altered at Mr Green’s expense, he having cut away his building so as to allow the channel to be placed in its proper position. 5. The eastern portions of Kilmore and Chester streets have been metalled and rolled, and the eastern ends of Armagh street, Gloucester street, and Hereford street are now being done, and when they are finished Peterborough street east will .be done. 6. I have advertised, for 25 new lamp-posts and lanterns to he placed at places described in the annexed list, subject to the approval of the Council.” The report was considered clause by clause, and was approved. RESERVES COMMITTEE. The following was road : " Tour Committee advertised the 'Sandhills Eeserve for letting, and received two tenders, and recommend the Council to accept Mr George King’s.” Councillor Kiver moved that the report be adopted. Councillor Ayers asked if the highest tender had been recommended P Councillor -Reese said that it had not been. Councillor Hosting said that, with respect to the tenderers, Mr King would exact no rebate if tho Council planted any extent of the reserve, whereas in respect to the other tenderer, a rebate would have to he made. Councillor Ayers understood that the other tender was £l2 10s higher than that of Mr George King. Councillor Eeese explained that the Council had been to a considerable extent committed to Mr King, who had already started to work on the reserve. The Council approved of the report. Councillor Ayers dissenting. CEMETEET COMMITTEE. The following was read:— “ Tour Committee begs to lay before the Council the following propositions for its approval:—That the Christchurch Public Cemetery be declared now open. That persons wishing to secure plots therein apply to the Town Clerk. That the Gorernor-in-Council be respectfully requested to close all cemeteries in this city. That tenders be invited for the erection of a lodge near the entrance and a rotunda for shelter, the lodge to be connected with the Telephone Exchange, tho total cost not to exceed £SOO. That a tramway to the cemetery is necessary, and should he constructed so soon as the ratepayers consent to a loan for this and other permanent works.” The report was considered clause by clause and approve J . FEj brigade. The following was read: — “ Your Committee has considered Councillor Hosldng’s resolution referred to it last meeting, and from inquiries made, recommends that no action be taken.” Superintendent Turton’s letter re the circumstances of Mrs W est was read. Councillor Eeese informed the Council that the Foresters and other Societies had not forgotten Mrs "West, and that the Brigade intended to get up a concert for the benefit of the family. Councillor Hosting’s motion would establish an undesirable precedent. Councillor Hosting explained that he had been informed that Mrs West was pushed for funds, but had since learned that steps were being taken to supply her wants. He agreed with the report. The report was approved. QUESTION. Councillor Bennetts asked if the Freethought Hall was licensed. He saw that lectures were being delivered there, and an entrance fee was being charged. His Worship answered in the negative. The matter was referred to the Council officers. COMPLIMENTARY VOTE. Councillor Eeese moved—“ That this Council tender a vote of* thanks to T. Hobbs and G. Cooper, for their past services as members of the Fire Brigade, for 18 and 10 years respectively, and regret that ill-health is the cause of their resigning.” Councillor Prudhos seconded the motion, which was agreed to. CITY LOAN, Councillor Bowman moved—“ That his Worship the Mayor call a meeting of the Finance and Works Committees combined, to take into consideration the amount of money necessary to lie borrowed for permanent works, such as roads, bridges, kerbing, channelling, asphalting footptths, additional lamps, and construction of a tramway to cemetery, and to bring up a report on the same.” After some discussion, the resolution was lost. After some formal business, the Council adjourned till May 5.
