[Reuter's Telegrams,] [Received Feb. 29, at 10 p.m,] SYDNEY, Feb. 29. The election to the seat in the representation of Sydney, rendered vacant by the resignation of the Hon G. H. Eeid, Minister of Education, took place to-day. The retiring member was opposed by Mr Burdekin, who was returned at the head of the poll by a majority of 40 votes. MELBOURNE, Feb. 29. The Merchant Shipping and Underwriters’ Association wrote to the Victorian Navigat ion Board calling attention to the race which is alleged to have taken place in Port Philip between the steamships Adelaide and Wairarapa. The Board replied, stating that it had decided to take steps to hold an enquiry into the collision which occurred between the two vessels. The reply, however, states that the Board has no power to prevent racing.
