SPORTING NOTES .

fßt Act-kon.]

I remind owners that nominations for the Wairarapa Autumn mooting must be scut in on Thursday next, 2 fth inst. Mr rilbrow has engaged R. Derritt’s services for the rest of the season.

Sir Bedevore, Trenton, Ugly Buck, Fusilier. and Hercules arrived here from Auckland during last week. Salvage, Welcome Jack, and Clarence will stay at Wellington to fulfil engagements at tho Summer mooting there on Fob, 1 and 2. Odd Trick has boon scratched for all engagements at tho Wanganui Autumn Meeting. Parere has been scratched for the Cup, and Hippona for the Flying and District Races.

The match between tho two ponies Dandy and Polly, which was to have come off on Jan. IP, foil through.

I am sorry to have to record tho death of Mr Thomas Milner, who was well-known here in coursing circles and also os the owner of several trotting horses, among them Our Pony, Cock Robin and, last but not least, old Blackboy. Mr Milner died at his residence last Saturday, aged 43, and leaves a widow and a large circle of friends to mourn his loss.

Mr John Marshall has purchased the yearling colt by Musket Locket (full brother to Necklace), from the New Zealand Stud Company. The price paid was £3OO.

Tho Now Zealand Stud Company shipped nine Musket yearlings by the Ringarooma for Sydney on Wednesday; and also three two-year-old draught colts. Major. Wabnsloy accompanied the shipment, which will bo sold on Monday week, 2Sth inst. Last Monday the final payments were made for the Wellington Cup, and out of 37 nominations only 10 are now left in, viz.. Welcome Jack, Vanguard, Mischief, Salvage, Tim Whiffler, Leonato, Normanby, Tho Poet, Refrigerator and Miss Juan, and out of these I do not suppose that more than six will go to the post. Welcome Jack with 9st 61b should be one of the most conspicuous at the finish, and should hold Salvage safe at a difference of only half a stone. Although Mischief with Sst 101 b won this event last year, I do not fancy her at all against the company she will meet on Friday week, but Vanguard, who, I am informed, has been putting in some excellent work lately, must be considered very dangerous goods. Tim Whiffler, with Sst, should beat both Mischief and Salvage, and if he runs in the same form as at Auckland, he will be very near winning tho Wellington Cup of 18S4. The Poet, to be in the front at all, must have greatly improved since his running on New Year’s Day, and unless he has, I don’t think he possesses a ghost of a show, while Miss Juan is about the best of the light weights, and, should the pot bo boiled over, I should not be surprised if she performed that feat. To sum up, tho winner, I believe, will be found in the following : Welcome Jack, Vanguard, Tim Whiffler, and Miss Juan.

I am pleased to see that Mr Montague Smith is having a change of luck up North. At the Poverty Bay meeting I notice that Kingask won the Flying Handicap of 80 sovs, the Tradesman’s Handicap of 120 sovs, and walked over for the Public Purse, value 70 sovs, while Tim Whiffler won the Selling Race of 30 sovs. A meeting of the Stewards of tho Wacrenga-a-Hika Racing Club was held to consider the charge of suspicious riding against J. M'Kenna, the rider of Imposter in the Boxing-day Handicap. After hearing the evidence the Stewards entirely exonerated the jockey from foul riding, as it was clear’y proved to them that Imposter overpoweied his jockey. The decision was fully confirmed by the fractiousness and temper shown by Imposter in the District Plate.

At a meeting of the Stewards of the Ross Racing Club, the jockey Michael Reedy and the horse Win-if-yoy-can were disqualified from riding or running on the course of the Club during the pleasure of the Stewards.

The Totara Jockey Club, after paying over £207 9s, the amount of stakes given at their summer meeting, is in a very satisfactory position, having a good balance in hand.

The Lyttelton and Port Victoria Racing Club have issued the programme for their meeting on March 6, in which I see that £137 is the amount of the added money. The Cup is worth £3O, the Handicap Hurdles £25, while there are three races of £ls each, and four of smaller value; nominations close Jan. 28. The programme will be found on our first page of adverments.

The Taranaki Jockey Club have again come out with a most liberal programme for their Anniversary meeting on April 1 and 2, the total amount of added money being £Ol5. I notice that the value of the Jockey Club Handicap has been reduced from 300 sovs to 250 sovs, and the steeplechase from 75 sovs to 60 sovs, but the Autumn Handicap remains as last year, at 150 sovs. A Flying Handicap of 100 sovs lias been added to the programme, and there are several other races from 50 sovs downwards, all of which should attract good nominations. The Wairarapa Jockey Club have also issued an enticing programme for the Autumn meeting, with £619 of added money. The meeting will he held on the Tauherenikau course on Feb. 21 and 22. On the first day are the District Produce Stakes of 115 sovs, the Champagne Stakes of 100 sovs, the Tauherenikau Stakes Handicap and Wuirarapa District Handicap of 50 sovs e.'ujh. The second day’s programme includes the Cup Handicap of 100 sovs, and Grand Stand and Hurdle Handicaps of 50 sovs each. Nominations for the handicaps close on Jan. 24. General entry day is on Fob. J 5. At the Birch wood Steeplechase Mr Gardner's Nutmeg won the Wairio Cnp and Maiden Plate, while the Open Hurdle Race fell to Mr J. Smith’s May Day. Mr A. Carnigan’s Con pulled off the Maiden Steeplechase, and JVV R. Pattersi m's Gipsy the Steeplechase Cup, the well-known Timaru horse, Hard Times, being second on both occasions. Mr R. Tapper’s Daybreak appropriated the Maiden Hurdles, and Mr Ellis’ Dandy the Trot, while Mr Sinerdon’s Sluggard won the Consolation.

At the Cromwell Races, Mr J. 11. Stephenson won the Grand Stand Handicap'of 50 sovs, and the Flying Handicap of ■K) sovs, both with Dori Jose ; in the latter event Epicure, who was purchased from Messrs Mason and Vallancc a short time, ago, ran second and Statesman third. Mr Cl Turnbull’s colt Sauntoror, by Young Angler, won the Derby, and Mr J. Foster’s Netberby the Maiden Plato. Mr T. Cogan secured the Jockey Club Handicap of 70 sovs, with Young Barwon, Mr C. M’Kenzie’s Haricot being second. The County Plate of 20 sovs was won by Mr J. Rivers’ Rosartus, and the Consolation by Mr Foster's Rocket, Statesman third. Mr Kenyon’s Neeera won the two principal events at Waikouaiti, viz., the County Cup and Publicans’ Purse i while Mr Russell’s Foreman was credited with the Handicap Hurdles and Ladies’ Purse. On the first day of the Greymouth Jockey Club's March meeting are the West Coast

Produce Stakes, of 80 sovs, for nil West Coast bred horses of two yours and upwards, weight for ago ; tho Jbckoy Club Handicap, of 125 sovs; tho Hurdle Handicap, of 60 sovs j with a Hack Ertco of 10 sovs, and the Hallway Stakes Handicap of 50 sovs. The second day commences with a second Uurdlo Handicap of 40 sovs, to ho followed by tho Gnldtiolds’ Handicap, of 100 sovs j a Hack Handicap, of 10 sovs i the Grey Valley Stakes Handicap, of 00 sovs ; a Consolation, of 25 sovs ; finishing up with a Forced Handicap, of 80 sovs. Tho total amount of tho programme is JJS3O,

At tho settling over tho Totara Jockey Club Summer mooting tho following amounts wore paid over:—Mr Emerson, £lOl 11s j Mr Clarke, £52; Mr Petrie, £2l 10s i Mr Adamson, £5) 10a ; Mr Reedy, £9 10s; and Mr Cameron, £lO Bs. Total, £207 9s.

At tho settling in connection with tho Waitara Jockey Club moating tho following sums wore paid away : —Mr J. J. Logan, £100; Mr lies kin, £9O; Mr Collins. £lO5 j Mr E. 'Woods, £SO ; Mr J. Brake, £4O j Mr M‘Rae, £3O j Mr D. Tolfar, £3O ; Mr Hooker, £25; Mr Barley man, £10; Mr Higginson, £10; and Mr O’Brien, £5. Total, £495. BETTING MARKET. Tho market hero has boon extremely dull of Into, owing to tho absence of tho major portion of the ring, who havo been In the North Island. Vanguard levs boon made a firm favourite for the Wellington Cup, 2 to 1 being taken freely, but the best offer now is 3 to 2; Tim Whilllcr, Welcome Jack, and Mischief aro the only others receiving any particular support, and the best offer for the two last named is 5 to 2, while Tim Whifllor’a price is 4to 1. For tho Dunedin Cup Nonsense has received a deal of support, while Oudois, July and Johnny Faulkner have been booked for fair amounts. The following aro tho latest quotations: —
