The stables belonging to the Exchange Hotel at Havelock were destroyed by fire yesterday afternoon. Above the stables was a loft where there was a quantity of hay, access to which was by a ladder. Two of the proprietor’s children aged five and seven, were seen coming down the ladder, and immediately afterwards the place was on fire. The building was insured in tho Norwich Union for £IOO. In the lean-to of the stable was a quantity of beer, besides farm produce, all of which was totally destroyed, and was uninsured. NEW PLYMOUTH, Oct. 2. The Borough Council has decided that a poll should be taken of ratepayers on tho question whether the fifty acre reserve, now used as a racecourse, should bo znado over to the Borough for reserve purposes, or bo kept as a racecourse in perpetuity. At 2,30 on Sunday morning six young men had bean found gambiingin the presence of the landlady by the police. The Resident Magistrate said ho was satisfied there was a case for conviction, but agreed to allow appeal on the point that the landlord had not known of tho occurrence. The landlord was in bed. The shareholders of the Lankey Creek Cement Mining Company, Seefton, met hero to-day to receive the report of Mr Frayes, tha expert sent over to report upon the concern. He reported that from the prospects, the thinness of the cement, and the nature of the ground, it was not payable as far as the drives had reached. In answer to tho question, What is your private opinion of the claim ? he said he thought it was no good. Mr H. Bastings, a shareholder, said that anything more monstrous than this Lankey Creek affair bad never taken place on the face of the earth, in connection with mining speculation. Shortly after the arrival of the steamer Te Anau at Port Chalmers this morning one of the steerage passengers, a man named Woods, died from the effects of delirium tremens. He leaves a widow and four children, who were alio passengers. At the Supreme Court to-day John Day, aged 63, for rape on a child of tender years at Blueskin, was sentenced to five years’ hard labour.
