Mrs John Smith, widow of the late, John Smith, racehorse owner, claim £IOOO, damages for defamation, which was to hare been heard at the present sessions of the Supreme Court, has been settled, defendant paying £9O. Mrs Smith accused Bowlands, who was her husband's trainer, of selling a race. It is stated, in commercial circles that a well-known film of produce merchants hare made a private assignment of their estate for the benefit of their creditors; liabilities, £9OOO. A Blue Bibbon Army has been formed in Auckland. 160 joined at the initiation of the movement. The German Consul presented Captain Karacher, of the Carols, and Captain Beisler, of the Hyane, to the Oevernor to-day at Government House. His Excellency is greatly pleased with Auckland, and intends to protract bis ntay as long as is compatible with the discharge of his official duties. At the first daylight parade of Volunteers under the new regulations, the men mustered over 300 strong. THAMES, Amis 7. A Druids Lodge, with over 407 members, was opened here last night with every success by Walter Bishop, District President of the North Island. In the Besident Magistrate's Court, to-day, Mr M'Guire sued the owner of a totalisator, Mr Cohen, for £3, dividend on a race at the last Jookey Club meeting, wbioh plaintiff neglected to apply for till next day. Payment was refused on several grounds, the principal of these being that the ticket was not presented immediately after the race. Counsel for the defendant pleaded that the Jockey Club should have been sued. Judgment was given for the defendant (with costs) on the point of law that Cohen was employed by the Jockey Club, and was therefore not liable. Cohen had the outside totalisator. WELLINGTON, Apbii, 7. Messrs Stevens and Udys' sawmills at Waihakeme, near Carterton, were burnt down this morning. The breaking.down maohinery was saved. It is believed that all was untosured. A supplementary Gazette issued to-day contains the new Treasury regulations relative to public accounts j also, the conditions and specifications in connection with the tenders for the Direct Steam Service. At the adjourned meeting of the Titanic Steam and Iron Company, the Chairman mentioned that since last meeting the Dunedin shareholders had been communicated with in reference to the proposal that affairs should be wound up, ana a reply had bean received that the majority were in favour of reintroducing the Bill brought down last session. After a slight discussion, it was decided to adjourn the meeting, for the purpose of enabling the liquidator to ascertain what opinion the Southern shareholders had arrived at since the reply of the Colonial.

Another attempt will be made on Tuesday. INVEROABGILL, Apbii. 7. A cow shed and stables on the farm of B. Andrews, near Winton, were burned down this morning. A horse and harness and a quantity of grain were destroyed. The estimated total loss is over £2OO. There was no iosuranoe. . To-day, Major Atkinson was interviewed by deputations mostly with reference to looal matters. Tonight he addressed a meeting in Sloan's Theatre, the Mayor in the chair. About 400 persons W6re present. The subject was "Prevention of Pauperism," whioh he treated in similar language to that used in the northern towns. On Monday morning the Treasurer reoeivee a deputation from the Obamber of Commerce, re freight by measurement on the port lines of railway. An elaborate statement has been prepared by Mr George Niohol, showing extraordinary comparative charges by weight and measurement. At noon he turns the first sod of the Seaward Bush Bail way, at a point about three-quarters of a mile from town, oc the Bluff line. It iftumoured that the Government sohool residence at Wrey's Bush was destroyed by fire yesterday. The sohoolmaster was from home, and had no insurance. An interesting divorce suit is likely to engage the attention of the Supreme Court at its impending sitting in Divorce and Matrimonial causes jurisdiction at Wellington. The petitioner is Charles Maidment, a contractor, and he sues for a dissolution of marriage on account of alleged adultery on the part of his wife with the 00-reßpondent, Bamuel Bowe. The parties were married at Wairac, Marlborough district, on July 16, 1859, the wife's maiden name being Hannah Pickering. Since marriage petitioner has lived with his wife at Wairau, and subsequently at the Hutt; and there have been issue of the marriage, the eldest of whom is now married to a resident of Palmerston North. The petitioner alleges that on about June 13, 1881, and on other days between that date and March 28 last, Hannah Maidment at the Hutt committed adultery with Samuel Bowe of the Hutt, settler; wherefore he prays for a decree granting annulment of the marriage, and further that the co-respondent may be ordered to pay the sum of £IOOO by way of damage, as well as all costs incidental to the proceedings.
