-» CHRISTCHURCH, SiTtrauAt, Sot. 26. (Before R. Wostcnrr. ond F. Hobbs, Kqg.) Pbttx Lakomnt.— Thomas Jurdine wo* charged, on remand, with stealing a moat chopper, value 3s, the property of Beniamin Soarlc. Mr Stringer appeared for accused. The evidence showed that the chopper in question had boon misted from the yard of the Foresters’ Arms, of which prosecutor wan licensee, on the previous morning, and subsequently found in prisoner's cart, along with some bottlee ho had collected. It was suggested for the defence that the accused had picked the chopper up in the right-of-way running by the hotel, as it appeared that some children had been playing with it in the hotel Sard the night before it waa missed. Mr tringer called the Rev. J. Ward, who said that ho believed the accused bad been endeavouring to lead an honest life for a considerable time past, and that he was very industrious. The Bench cautioned the prisoner not to appear in a similar predicament again, and took a lenient view of the present ease, ordering a oonviolion to bo entered, and discharging the prisoner.
LBKSTON. FaiDAX, Nov. 28. (Before 0. Whitefoord, Esq., 8.M., and W. D. Lawrence, Esq.) Vaqbanot.—Frank Burns, on remand, was charged with having no lawful visible means of support. The Bench gave the accused a severe caution, and said that notice would be served on the various publicans in the district prohibiting them supplying him with any intoxicating liquor for twelve months ; and any person found buying intoxicating liquor for him would be severely dealt with. OiTir> Cash.— F. Browning, v. A. Roberts, senr., claim £2 6s 6d. Judgment for plaintiff without costs.
