The London Qaaeite to-day contains the announcement that the dignity of Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George haa been conferred upon the Hon Joshua Peter Bell, President of the Legislative Council of Queensland.
PRINCE BISMARCK’S POLICY. BERLIN. Not. 25. At the meeting of the Betohrtag today Prince Bismarck made a atatemest in which he alluded to the ritoation of Government in view of the result of the elections. The Chancellor announced that In the case of the failure of the projects which he would lay before Parliament he would resign the conduct of Borne affairs, entrusting the same to the Vice-President of the Council, while he would himself alone retain the control of the Foreign Affair* of the Empire. THE GREEK POST OFFICE. CONSTANTINOPLE, Not. 24. A difficulty has arisen between the Turkish and Greek Governments regarding the existence of a Greek Post Office in this city. The matter haa formed tbe subject of lengthy diplomatic communications, and, aa no settlement could he arrived at, the Porto has now peremptorily ordered the dosing of the office. THE RUSSIAN WAR INDEMNITY. It has transpired that Mr Bourke, Turkish bondholders’ delegate, did his utmost daring the progress of negotiations with the Ottoman Financial Commission. to support the Government In its refusal to agree to the demand of the Russian Ambassador, that the question of payment of the war indemnity should be dealt with simultaneously with the claims of foreign bondholders. COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE. LONDON, Nov, 24. Consols are at 1001. The Bank rate of discount to 5 per cent, and the market rate 4| per cent. The total reserve in notes and bullion in the Bank of England is £10,750,000. New Zealand securities are unchanged. Adelaide wheat, ex warehouse, is quoted at 575; New Zealand do, 52s t»d; Adelaide flour, ex store, 425; Australian fallow, best beef, 395; best mutton, 41s 6d. There is only a limited demand for Australian hides, sad prices are Id lower. At the wool sale to-day, 7800 bales were catalogued. Prices were firm, and an active demand was experienced. Goneola are unchanged. New Zealand securities are without quotable change. Adelaide wheat, ex store, has declined Is, and is quoted to-day at 565. New Zealand wheat remains at 52s 6d. The total quantity of wheat afloat for Great Britain is 2,400,000 quarters. Adelaide floor, ex warehouse, 425. Australian tallow—best beef, 395; best mutton, 41s 6d.
At the wool sale to-day 8200 bales were offered, making a total of 29,900 bales catalogued since the opening. Active demand was experienced for all descriptions.
