ENTLEMEN,—I have to thank those who RJT were bo fully prepared to secure my return to the General Assembly for either of the above electorates, for the compliment they have paid me, and regret that my business engagements will not justify me in neglecting the same, even for the honour of representing either the Avon or Lincoln District in Parliament. In the case of the Avon, in the face ot the likelihood of so many political colts being returned to Parliament, I think it wise to retain the services of your present member, for it is obvious that a steady old shatter will be necessary bo couch to prevent the harness being broken or tho overturned. Ot course tho Avon M.H.S. is not all my fancy painted him, for he requires keeping well in hand. A gentle usage of the spnr, ride him with a light but steady rein, and insist upon his reporting himself to his stable periodically, and ho will do for a year or so, previous to his elevation to tho Upper Chamber. TO THE ELEOTOBS OP STANMOBE, GENTLEMEN.-I am informed that Mr Pilltet is spreading a report that 1 have caused or procured bis dismissal from the staff of the '* Telegraph ” newspaper. The report is wholly untrue, and is circulated solely as an electioneering dodge. I have never directly or indirectly attempted or used my Inflaenoo to procure his dismissal, or in any way interfered with bis engagement on the staff of the “ Telegraph " or any other newspaper. I am, yours Ac., 7627 36 W. P, OOWLISHAW. TO THE ELECTORS OP STANMOBE. /3. EMTLBMBN *~ I accuse Mr Pilliet ot making VJf the following statements, with the objoot ot exciting false sympathy for himself and a feeling of resentment against Mr Cowllahaw, viz . 1. That Mr Cowlithaw is tlio proprietor of the "Telegraph" newspaper. 8. That Mr Cowllahaw has dlsmlstod him (Mr PlUlatlor procured bis dismissal from tho staff of tho "Telegraph." Ur CaygllTa replies to my questions, published in the " Star" of Saturday, abundantly proved the statements to be false. Mr Pllliet’s letter admits they are not true. I gathsr from his letter—l. That ho fMr Pilliet) admits making the above statements. 2. That his (Mr Pllliet's) first engagement with Mr CaygiU expired some time after he (Mr Pilliet) waa standing for Btonmoro, and that ho (Mr Pilliet) wrote the ortlolvs in tbo "Telegraph" running down that great Liberal, Mr Holm®*, praising up Mr Pilliet, and condemning Mr Cowllahaw. 3. That ho (Hr Pilliet) made a now engagement with Ur Cayglll to write for the newspaper on any but political topics. This, 1 suppose, means that Mr Cayglll thought that it was not docent that the editor, Mr Pilliet, should write loading articles on Ur Pilliet, or hta opponents Ur Cowliskaw or Mr Pleeber, without aiming his name. 4. That Mr Pllliut was on the staff whonl wrote my letter to Mr Cayglll. I addressed my letter to tho proprietor, because I understood Mr Pilliet waa the editor. I am informed that he haa resigned sluoa my letter appeared in the newspaper. Is this troeP Hr Pilliet soya that be never canvasses, lam told that bo not only does so, but that he canvasses Roman Catholic* as a fellow.Boman Catholic, and Protestants as a freethinker, and a convert from Roman Catholicism, telling a pretty little story of how he quarrelled with and kicked the priest out ot his house, I pass over In silence Mr PUUet'a epithet that 1 am a small lawyer’s dork, named Goodman, beyond remarking that a good causa requires no bad names. Mr Plllkt will find that he does not hdp hia cause by sneering at any man's occupation—however bumble It may be—and that there are other thing* mile besides ability that ths public requite In a pus,„ man, sincerity and good character being amongst them.—l am, Ao., 7006 85 JAS.
