QUARTERLY LICENSING COURT.

RANGIOEA. Tuesday, Mabch 16. Commissioners present —Messrs C. Whitefoord (Chairman), J. C. Boys, A. H. Cunningham, and 8. Heywood. The adjourned quarterly sitting was held as above, when the complaints brought by the police against the Bed Lion Hotel were Mr Greason appeared for the licensee, and stated that his-client was prepared to deny the accusation of using bad language to the constables. The Chairman said the Commissioners did not lay any weight on that, but they referred to that part of the report wherein the licensee was charged with allowing drunken men to remain about the premises. Mi- Gresaon submitted that if one part of the report were proved false, it would throw a doubt on the remainder, and after examining the constable, he contended that it would be very much more just to the licenseholder if, instead of making broad assertions to the Commissioners, the oases reported were brought before the Bench and dealt with at the time. The Chairman said that there was no doubt that the licensee had in this case formed a wrong impression in thinking that he was not responsible for men about the house in a state of intoxication, but he must remember that in future it was his c.uty, and he was responsible for such proceedings. The house had always been well conducted, and the police reports had been very satisfactory ; in fact, the present was the first complaint made against him, bub ho cautioned the licensee to prevent a repetition of the offence with which he had been charged. He agreed, with Mr Gresson that it would be as well that individual cases should bo brought before the Bench and dealt with when they weie brought forward. i transfer of the temporary license of tpe Junction Hotel was granted from J. W. Francis to George HaxeU. |
