LYTTELTON HARBOUR BOARD PICNIC.
The second annual picnic of the employees of the Lyttelton Harbour Board and their friends took place on Saturday. At 9 50 the p.s. Lyttelton, with about 400 aboard, including children and ladies, left the wharf and steamed down the harbour,* Port Levy being the spot chosen for the picnic ground. The Lyttelton Fife and Drum band and a small quadrille band were aboard, both of which gave the votaries of Terpsichore an opportunity of enjoying their particular pleasure in the somewhat limited space at their disposal. The weather ma all that could be wished for, the sea being quite smooth. Off the pilot-station the steamer was stopped to pickup Captain Galbraith and his party from the pilot station, and Port Levy was soon reached. , , , The party were landed m boats, and soon split up into various groups, each choosing their camping ground in different parts of the bush near the water’s edge. Lunch was then the order of the day, and then sports of various kinds were organised, such as racing, cricketing, quoiting, dancing, &. There was an abundant supply of lollies, toys, &c., for the children, who enjoyed themselves greatly. Captain Clarke, and the crew of the ps Lyttelton, who did all they could to make everyone in the steamer comfortable, the success that attended the day is duo. Good humour and thorough enjoyment prevailed throughout the day, with the exception of a slight scrimmage amongst outsiders just, before starting on the return trip. Port levy was left shortly before 6 p.m., and Captain Galbraith’s party left at the Pilot Station, three hearty cheers being given rrif ® a P*- a * Q and Mrs Galbraith as they left. The wharf was reached at 7 p.m., and the large party were quickly landed, Captain JVvLellan seeing all safely ashore. The holiday was a most exceedingly enjoyable one, and thoroughly appreciated by those for whom it was given. Before leaving Port levy a collection was made for the benefit of the Maoris living at the Bay.
