ACCOMMODATION AT RAILWAY STATIONS.
Our Northern Correspondent writes : There appears to be a great difference in the method of deal-ng with customers who use the railway as a means of transferring goods from one part of Canterbury to another, and this from some misapprehension on the part of the railway customers more than from the want of urbanity on the part of those in authority. Complaints have been made at a leading township in the north of a want of courtesy on the part of the station-master at an important station, on the ground that he does not allow any goods to be removed from the shed unless the attendant fees are first paid. These complaints have of late been very frequent, and having been requested “to expose the matter,” 1 have been led to make a few inquiries about it. The result is that I find that whenever the customer has applied in the specified manner for a regular account of his goods’ carriage, he (the customer) has been favoured with a ledger account, and his week’s account has been placed therein, and the amount collected weekly. In the other ease, the customer has not noticed the rule laid down on this subject, and has, through his own neglect, been compelled to pay for his goods as he has taken them away. To qualify a customer for a ledger account is very simple, and those who now complain should adopt the more simple plan of applying to head-quarters for an open account.
