BOARD OF EDUCATION.
Thsfortnighlly meeting of the Education Board was held at the Normal School jesterday afternoon ; present—Messrs J. Icgfcir (Chairman), H. J. Tanered, H. E. Webb, A. Duncan, Bor 0. Eraser. BBXIBINO ALLOWANCES. A.letter wae received ifrom the Education Department, Wellington, intimating thbt them are no funds from which paymenks-of retiring allowances or compensation to teachers can be made. EXTENSION OE HOLIDAYS. A letter was read from Mr Watkins* suggesting that the holidays 'of the Normal School'should be extended for another week, owing; to certain alterations being made to the School buildings. Agreed to. ■ “Mr OWN HEW ZEALAND HOME.?' ; Mr John Grigg, of the Thames, wrote* enelosing a copy of his poem, “Mr O wav New Xml and Home.” He stated that he was having it printed with a hope that ih may prove acceptable throughout the Colony. He would be happy to supply the Board With copies at prices, enclosed should they dfecide upon introducing it into their Sohookh ■ j The Eov 0. Fraser' suggested' that it should bo declined with thanks, but. the Board decided to let the matter stand over lor a time. BBTIBED SOHOOLMASTEfc. i Mr George Peter Kay, sohoolmßstorj. Bioke district school, wrote, suggesting that the Government should ask Parliament to place funds at their disposal for the purpose of giving retiring allowances to. worn-out. teachers; He had no* one to look to but the Government for support. He wished to know if' the Government; would grant' him one Sear’s salary, and pay his expenses to Bngmd, whore he could avail himself of an institution in which he cOuld obtain an asylum. He could not do so in the Colony. It was decided to submit the case to the Government. The. Board then went into Committee to revise the scheme of augmentation allowances so as to adapt: it to the new system of classification. The following scheme was agreed to: 1) 0 B A
calving a higher bonus than they would be entitled to under the above scale shall be paid at the present rate till March 31,1881, during which time they will have opportunities of qualifying for a continuance of their present bonuses by attaining a higher place on the class list.
