OPAWA RAILWAY PLATFORM.
TO THE EDITOB OP TUB LYTTELTON HUES.
Sir, —Hating occasion to pass backwards and forwards between Christchurch and Lyttelton, I often notice the trouble there is for passengers to join and leave the train at Opawa. In going to Port, the engine along with the two first carriages, always goes on to the bridge, and the two carriages are always the only two carriages in the train ; then, in coming to town, the two last carriages are always left standing on the bridge, which are on the same two that were next the engine on the down journey. The down platform is nearer the river than the up, which accounts for the opposite ends of the train being left on the bridge, and, should some careless person mistake the siae of leaving the train on a dark night, the chances are he will find himself in the water or on the road beneath. It was only this morning that a young lady was compelled to proceed to Christchurch as she could not alight at Opawa. Surely this dangerous and inconvenient practice of stopping trains on a bridge might be altered without any expense and very little trouble.—l am, &c. SECOND-CLASS PASSENGER. Christchurch, June 18,1879.
