CHRISTCHURCH. Thuesday, Feb. 20. (Before G. L. Hellish, Esq., R.M.) Dednkenhess. —A first offender was fine ss. Stealing Feom the Pbeson. —Samm Dobbinson was charged, on remand from Fel 19, with stealing the sum of £1 from tb person of John Graham Lyde. George Rennet a painter, residing in the Springfield road, di Ethat on Feb. 18 he was in the Cit at mid-day. Saw Lyde sitting on form and prisoner at his side. Prii oner put his hand into prosecutor pocket, took something out, and hande it to another man who went awa immediately afterwards. The prosecute stated that he was a labourer. On Feb. 18 h was in the City Hotel. When he went int the Hotel he had a pound and one half-crow in his pocket. Witness missed the mone, after his attention was drawn to what prison e had done. Constable Nelson stated that h was called to the City Hotel on Tuesda; afternoon. Saw prisoner, prosecutor, and th witness Bennett in the bar. The two latte preferred a charge against prisoner. Prosecc tor, being called, said he had one pound am a half-crown in his possession when he cami to the hotel, but only 2d after prisoner wa alleged to have taken bis hand out of hi (prosecutor’s) pocket. Prisoner denied steal ing the money, . asserting that it wa not his inclination to do so, as he hai not a heart big enough for a thief Prosecutor recalled stated that he had th money referred to after he paid for the las four drinks, but could not say if he had i when he lay down. Disobeying an Cedes of the Const— Thomas King was charged with having neglected for the space of one month to obei an order of the Court to pay £1 per weel towards the support of his wife and four children, contrary to the provisions of the Destitute Persons Relief Ordinance. Defendant admitted being a month inarrear, but asked for a month to pay it in. His Worship sent him to gaol to bo kept to hard labour for one month. TIMARU. Wednesday, Feb. 19. (Before B. Beetham, Esq., 8,M.) Dbnnk and Disobdebly.— John Sullivan was fined £2. Unnatneal Offence, —Michael Reilly was committed for trial. During the hearing of the case it transpired that liquor had been supplied at the Bailway Hotel, Pleasant Point, to persons in a state of intoxication, and his Worship commented severely on the practice, stating that in the present case someone would have to be made responsible for what had occurred.
