It was lying on the beach. On going further along the beach he saw a hwt with something in it like a human foot He sent two boys to teU thepohoe,and thelattw took the body away, fie also found mother foot, similar to. the first one, a little further alone tbo boftoh* Detective Neil deposed to going to the beach that morning with Sergeant Haldane, 6id seeing The 'fisl witness, vrho was-new a body lying oh the beach. There wereMso two boots, with a man’s foot in each. He recollected Sunday, Sept. 1 last, whenfourvessels wore cast ashore, and one, the ketch Pawnerston, held to her anchorage. There was a report of two men being drowned, of whom was < Captain George Bvans, and the other Was a ! man from the Melrose, one from the Melrose was recovered, but Bvane • body was-not ieen. The ketch had only just anbh'dred in the tarhourj when, the] ptonn began.. fie got adescriptiohfrom tbbbailors of the Palmerston of the captain. He bad seen flie body, which corresponded, with the description r given. The hoots and enmean shirt 1 corresponded. No other accident Md occurred , lately in the harbour. " Inspector Pender deposed to being on shore on Sept. 1 lost, watching' the wkecks, and he raw the Melrose part from her anchors. She passed dose; to the ketch Palmerston. He saw a’ rnan jump from the ketch into the water, evidently intending to get on board the Melrose. As far as they could see he failed* He saw, the crew when they came ashore, and they reported the loss of the captain, Gieorge Evans. The Coroner having summed up the evidence given) the jury returned a verdict “ That the body found is that of George Evans,’, accidentally 'drowned in the Timaru harbour 6n Sept. I last.?* . , , i
