THIS GRAIN SEASON OF 1878.
Now that the grain season for 1879 will be on in the course of a few days, the fdlowing table arranged in alphabetical order will be interesting, as showing the grain carried from each station on the Christchurch section of railways for the year ending June 30, 1878. It will be premised that at the date mentioned, the Christchurch section included Ambcrloy to Palmerston with branches, Palinersten being the farthest point south to which the line then extended. The above table shows that grain had been forwarded from Christchurch, Heathcote Valley, Lyttelton, and Oamaru stations. In those cases it originally came to stores, and waa re-despatched for shipment. In all other instances the tonnage carried from each station may be taken as some guide of the quantity of grain produced in the several surrounding districts. It will also be seen from the table that the total quantity forwarded for shipment to Timaru during the season was 20,376 tons. But out of this lot there were several consignments, amounting in the aggregate to 7000 tons, which were received at Timaru for shipment from various districts, and were subsequently forwarded on to Lyttelton. Deducting this quantity from Timaru, and placing it to the credit of Lyttelton, the tonnage of grain carried last year on the Christchurch section, and shipped at the ports of Lyttelton, Timaru, and Oamaru, was as follows: Ljttelton ... ••• 87,399 tons Timaru 13,376 „ Oamaru 44,839 „ Total 145,614 „ It will be noted, with the exception previously mentioned, that Lyttelton received he grain grown on this side of the Bangitata j Timaru that produced between Rangitata South and Waimate; and Oamaru that between Waimate and Palmerston. Looking at the total quantity of grain carried last season on this section of the railways, and the vast amount of labour in receiving, delivery, and carriage which must have devolved upon the department; the only wonder is that with such an inadequate supply of rolling stock to the requirements as then existed, the authorities wei'e enabled to meet the other demands of ordinary traffic at all.
