ANNUAL MEETINGS OF ROAD BOARDS.
RICCAETON. The annual meeting of ratepayers of this district was held on Monday at the office of the Board, Upper Bicoarton. ' Mr H, J. flail, chairman of the Board, presided. A largo number of ratepayers were present. The Chairman read the balance-sheet and Statement of the receipts and expenditure for the past year, duly audited and certified by the district auditor. The receipts were as follows:—Balance from lost year, £6593 8a; Government grants and subsidies, £2255 19s sd; rates, £630 7s 5d ; contributions, £l5O 4a 8d; interest on current account, £3OB 4s 3dj other sources, £2O 16s 6d. The expenditure was—Contracts, Ac., on roads ana drains, £3202 6s lOd j plant, materials, and general expenses, £449; salaries and office expenses, £256 2s 8d; leaving a credit balance of £6052 10a 9d, of which sum £4500 was at a fixed deposit. The statement of assets and liabilities was as follows-Assets, £7702 10s 9d ; liabilities, £419 6s; estimated credit balance, £7283 5s 9d. The Chairman made an explanation of the action of the Board with reference to the formation of the toads through the Biccarton estate, showing that the rates leviable on that

Each candidate briefly addressed the ratepavers, thanking those who voted for them. * \ TO tc of thanks to the Returning Officer was proposed bv Mr Fun week, and seconded by Mr sutdif'and the proceedings terminated. SPREYDON. A meeting was held at the Boad Board office, Lincoln road, for the purpose of receiving ncminaUoni of candidates for membership on the Boad Board—the proceedings being conducted by Mr Joseph Richards, the retaining officer. Only three ratepayers were present, Mr J. 8. Buxton proposed Mr J. 8. M. Jacobsen, who, being a practical man, was fully entitled to the confidence of the rate* payers. The nomination wag seconded by Mr Elkanab 'Wilkinson. Mr J. T. Bell explained that Mr H. J. Tan erect, the former member, was not able to be present He (Mr Bell) bad agreed to propose Mr Tancred, and had now much pleasure in dome to. That gentleman had been moet serviceable as a member of the Provincial Council and of the Boad and Drainage Boards, and seemed to have the interest* of the district at heart. Mr Buxton would second the nomination pro forma. He considered Mr Tancred an eligible candidate, but at the same time he I held that a practical man would be far preferable to one who had no technical knowledge. Mr Jacobsen, however, preferred to appeal to the ratepayers on his merits. Mr Bell demanded a poll on behalf of Mr Tancred. A poll wiß accordingly be taken at the Boad Board office on Thursday, Jan. 16, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. EICCABTON BOAD BOARD. A meeting of this Road Board was held on Monday, immediately after the annual meeting of ratepayers, warn Mr H. J. TTal| was unanimously re-elected Chairman for the en* *uing year.
