LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Council met on Monday; present— His Worship the Mayor, Councillors Cunning* ham,’ Chalmers, Weyburn, Wood, M'Clatchie, Maogherson, Hawkins. EEOKIPT3. The Clerk stated that he had received £2l 6s 3d since the last meeting. COBBBSPONDBNCE. The following correspondence was read Circulars were read from the Colonial Secretary re the management of Charitable Aid ana Hospital. These circulars having already appeared in print, it is unnecessary to repeat them. From Mr H, Thompson, Chairman Charitable Aid Board, stating that a conference of representatives from the various Counties and Municipal bodies would be held in Christchurch, on Friday, Jan. 10, to consider the letter received . from Colonel Whitmore, dated Dec. 2, re charitable aid and hospital management. His Worship was requested to represent the Council at the Conference. IVom OLwoboUtucJij uttoilug to supply silicate paint at 60s per cwt. From Mr H. 0. Jacobson, resigning his office as Auditor, consequent upon his leaving Lyttelton, and thanking the Council for the courtesy shown him during his term of office. The Mayor stated that it would not be necessary for an election to be held for the appointment of another Auditor until the general election of Auditors, as the Council could appoint one at any time before the annual election. From Messrs Garforth and Lee, requesting a renewal of the license for their slaughteryard at Corsair Bay. The Foreman of Works, to whom the matter had been referred on a previous occasion, handed in a report suggesting that the yards should be, removed to either above the road in a bend of the gully or down to where the lime kilns ate situated on the beach. On the motion of Councillor Cunningham, it was resolved—‘‘That Messrs Qarforth and Lee’s license should be renewed for six months, and that they be informed that, they must find a fresh site for their yards by that time at a greater distance from the town.” From Mr Jno, S. Willoox, forwarding copy of valuation list for town, and asking tor return of amount of his deposit. The Clerk was instructed to return to Mr Willcox his deposit, and to take the necessary steps for making public the fact that the valuation list had been completed and could be inspected after Jan. 15. BESEB'i'OIBS. The Mayor reported that the Works Committee had not had the upper reservoir emptied, Owing to the continued dry weather. Councillor Weyburn and himself had visited the reservoirs last week, and found the upper reservoir quite free of animalouhe and .vegetable matter, the water being beautifully clear. The water in the lower reservoir was also very clear, afeu there was but very little vegetable matter in it. In the condensing reservoir animalouhe were found, but that was not used for anything but supplying the boiler. The Engineer had informed him that ;were the large reservoir emptied at present it would take ten weeks to refill it, owing to the large consumption of water, which averaged 66,000 gallons daily. The action of the Committee was approved. Several samples of the water ‘ were laid before the Council, and with one exception the water appeared to be very bright anafree from insect life. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £169 Os 8d were passed for payment. DOG BEGISTBATION. Councillor Hawkins enquired what record was kept of dogs registered. The Clerk stated that all names were entered alphabetically of persons who had registered their dogs. LBAVB OP ABSENCE. Leave of absence was accorded to Councillor Parsons. WATEB SUPPLY. Councillor Cunningham, Chairman Water Supply Committee, reported that the foreman of works required some additional plant for laying water services. It was resolved that the plant be procured. BKBIDBHT MAOIBTBATB. , His Worship said that Dr Donald’s term of office having expired, and being anxious that the town should not ba left without the services of a Resident Magistrate, lie had telegraphed to the Hon J.
