THE CANTERBURY ELEVEN IN VICTORIA.

[By Cable.] [from oub special correspondent,] CANTERBURY Y. MELBOURNE 0.0. CANTERBURY DEFEATED BY 169 BUNS. MELBOURNE, Jan. 7. The Canterbury Eleven took tho field after the dispatch of my telegram yesterday, and they were kept pretty busy, Gibson, M'Donncll, Tennant, M'Kinnon, and Kendall finding them plenty to do. The fielding was very indifferent, our men not being up to their usual Canterbury form, or showing the eagerness of the first innings of the Ballarat match. The bowling was fairly collared, and knocked all over the field. Lee took two wickets, Ashby two, C. Frith three, and W. Frith two. On resuming to-day Molboarao did not increase their score, as Tennant was caught off Frith’s third ball. Canterbury then had 292 to get to save a defeat, and this was evidently beyond their powers. The heat, so much beyond what they are accustomed to, and the fast wicket have proved their ruin in this match, aud though they made a gallant fight in the second innings, their opponents were too much for them. Baker, who has not yet displayed the form expected of him, was clean bowled second ball, but OUivier and Watson gave some trouble. Both they and Neilson played good cricket, but fatigue and Alexander’s bowling eventually broke down their resistance. W. Frith slogged determinedly in his usual style, and ran up 19, shortly after which the innings came to a close for 123. Canterbury were consequently defeated by 169 runs. If the bowling bad been handled with more skill yesterday, and the field kept more in hand, the Melbourne score would never have assumed such proportions; and in addition, the forced exertion in the dreadful heat induced carelessness. A great deal of interest was evinced in the game yesterday, but to-day there were scarcely 20 spectators on the ground. In the second innings Alexander took nine wickets for 50 runs, M’Shane one (Ollivier’s) for 29, and off Kendal 38 runs were made for no wickets. The East Melbourne match comes next, and Friday and Saturday are allotted for tbe South Melbourne game. The foUowing are the full scores : MELBOURNE.
