Four services are the more appreciated from having been rendered voluntarily, and I have much pleasure in informing you that the Minister has authorised the payment to you of the sum of £35, an account for which has been this day passed to the Treasury. A copy of the New Zealander of the 6th inst., containing the official report forwarded to the Government, is transmitted for your information.—l hare the honour to be, air, your most obedient servant, H. J. H. Klliott, Under-Secretary.— Dr Chilton, Collins’ Hotel, Christchurch.” The portion of the official report which is referred to in the above is as follows:—“ I desire to bring specially under the notice of the Government the valuable assistance which Dr Chilton, of the St Leonards, rendered me. This gentleman volunteered his services, and accompanied me in the Hinemoa, and when we found the unsatisfactory position of affairs at Otaki, ho at once undertook to direct and assist the immigrants—in fact he performed the duty widen properly appertained to the surgeon superintendent of the wrecked vessel. And I nave much pleasure in recommending that his services be recognised in some substantial manner. Probably the Hon. Mr Sheehan, who requested Dr. Chilton to proceed to Napier in the Hinemoa, would name the amount of gratuity which he considers that gentleman should receive.” Chkistouuuou Ich Factors'. —A factory for the production of pure ice was started on Tuesday last by Messrs Lindeman and Fogol, in the promises formerly used by Mr Willliams as a foundry, at the corner of Tnim and' Montreal streets. The machinery consists of a vertical engine driven by a fire horse power boiler, which works a vacuum C. On eno side of this pump a large coni’ is erected, and on another a long ioe chest, which contains a number of tins laid across the chest and holding perfectly pure water, the tins being surrounded by brine which cannot however come into contact with the water. The action of the vacuum pump resolves the ether into air, which is lea into the refrigerator,, after which it is forced into the condenser and again returned to ether, reaching the ice chest at the proper “ point,”—thus, with the exterior aid of the brine which by the same pump is forced through the refrigerator in a pipe to the ice-chest, brought bock and returned again—gradually frecsing the water in the tins. This action ts continued for five hours, resulting in the tins containing solid blocks of ice, formed without the aid of chemicals, It may bo added that the pipes m the condenser are covered with a constant stream of cold water pumped from an artesian well into the tank ami escaping into the side channels. Each block of ice when taken out of the chest forms a flat square, and weighs filhs. It is then placed in the doable lined ioo houses erected in one corner of the premises, and is packed in blankets and straw. Some of the ice manufactured last Friday and seen this momma in the ice house, looked as solid as when it ant came out of the chest. The sriling prim is 4d per lb for quantities up to i P** , M*il. Messrs Lindeman and Fogol have had Tory good sale for their im so far, and also manufacture to order very obotoe ice cream, whioh luxury will no doubt come into very general use during the liuamer. •
