CITY COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the OSty Council was held at 7 o’olook yesterday evening ; preient—Hie Worship the Mayor, and Councillor* Briggs, Toomer, lok, Bird, Sudden* klau, Pratt, Blokerton, and Thomson. BPBCIAB BUSINESS. A special meeting was first held for the purpose of taking over Carlton street and Park street, also for confirming a special resolution with regard to the watering rate. Both these matters were attended to in due form. BBIDGB OTEE THE AVOW. Connoillor lok presented a petition signed by 248 persons praying for the construction of a bridge over the Avon near Ward's Brewery. In presenting the petition, Oobnoillor lok gave notice that be wonld move that the Avon and Heatboote Hoad Boards'be written to with a view to having an interview witli'.the Council on the subject, , iOi.- ■ FXNANOB. _ - The Town Clerk repor.od the total receipts for the fortnight at £719 6s 8d; received on account of Drainage Bate No. 2, £14912s Id ; credit balance at Bank on general account, £S9B 2i ld;..Drainage Loan Account credit, * bills pud and tp hs. paid ifcy; Woike Committee for fortnight, £11)53 lie lid. * > sttbybtob’s bbpobt. 1. The pipe connections with the Gloucester street bath and sumps lu Armagh and Gloucester streets are now complete.' 2. The tank in . Cathedral square has been repaired, and is now re-filling with water. 1 3. The exoaration for thenew tank In Tuam street is commenced. 4. The contractor, Mr Smith, has orders to commence sinking the artesian in Armagh street west. 6. Minart, the asphalting contractor, has now completed about eight miles of footpaths. 6. The work of lowering Antigua street is completed, and is ready for shingling. 7. The work of forming the belt in front of the new railway station is commenced. Connoillor lok stated (bat (he Works Com* mittee were giving their attention to haying this most important streets in the city first asphalted. The report was adopted as it stood. - THB SWIMMING BATHS, The Mayor stated that no tender had been received for the baths which were not paying. Connoillor Biokerton said it would bo a question shortly whether it would not be as well to throw the baths open free. _ The consideration of the question was referred to (he Bath Committee. BUBGBBBBOBBS. Four tenders were reoeivsd.for printing 50 copies- of this roll. The lowest was from Messrs Tombs and Co (£9l7s 6d). It wa> resolved to postpone the printing for the present.

Councillor Ick thought lit Treadwell wge deterring the thinks of thi Council for the paper he had read to them that evening. He moved a revolution to that effeet.

A petition va* received from the inhabitants of Victoria etreet praying the Council at an early date to Inclaoe what remained of the noeth-seit aide of the above etreet, from Mr Qoee' corner to the town belt, in the aephaltevrorle now in program. and 10 perfecting the northern entrance to the town. A latter wu read from Mi Henry Dana* ford, the Secretary of the Insurance; Corn* panics Association, enclosing a ohrque for £2OO (the annual grant), and stating that the question of contributing to the expense of the Gloucester street bath would be laid before the next meeting of the Association. A letter was read from Mr Nanearrow, Ohiaf Inspector of Machinery, Wellington, stating that the Minister of Pnbho Works had not power to remit the fee^payable;under the 11 Inspection of Machinery Act, 1874 } but he might direct the amount to he refunded, which He bad'done.'
