ROAD BOARDS.

KOWAI. A meeting of the Hoad Board was held at the Boad Board office; Baloairn, on Monday, March 20> Members present—Messrs 0. Ff. Pemberton (Chairman), Samuel Coleman, J. E.. Pawsey, and Francis Croft.—The Surveyojj reported that the fourth instalment, 2671 ss, of the Provincial Government Grant was due to the Boardthat there was an overdraft, at the Bank amounting to £2lO 17s 9d.—Correspondence was read: From Mr John Innis, tendering his resignation on the Board, such having been accepted, and the Surveyor was Instructed to issue formal notices for the election of another member. —From Mr Charles Parsons, of Governor’s Bay, in reply to a leetter from the Board, re a roadway through Mr J. Moorbouse’s land ontheAshley, stating that as he intended to resign his trusteeship in that estate he did not feel disposed to .hake any action in the matter.—From Mr Charles Harper, M P C. re vote of £SO to Amberley.foot bridge. Resolved —“ That the Surveyor apply to the Secretary for Public Works for the amount, as the Board intend to construct same out of timber from old Ashley Bridge.”—From Mr Arthur Nalierra cutting to Waipara, by Mr Bandal Woodhouae’s. Besolved—“ That a sum of £5 be expended on the work in question, Messrs Folder and Elwin giving the remaining amount required.— From Mr James A. Cunningham, Chairman of the Ashley Boad Board, enclosing circular containing resolutions which had. passed that Board, vis;, deprecating the formation of Shires within the Provincial. Districts of Few Zealand, and that the Colony would be best served by the creation of a Provincial Board of Works within such Provincial Districts, in lieu of the proposed division of the Districts into Shires. The Board deferred the matter for farther consideration, and instructed the Surveyor to reply to Mr Cunningham to that effect, and thtnc him for having brought the matter before them.—A petition, numerously signed by ratepayers,'Was banded in,_ requesting the Board that, in consideration of the loss sustained by W. Beneghan on his contract, carried out on the Waipara Beach Cutting, that * bonus of £SO bo given to him. The Board - declined, to grant the petition, considering it would be a very bad precedent; at the came time, highly approved of the manner in which the contract had been carried out—Messrs Dick and Wilson waited upon the Board, re clearance of creek from Mount Grey road to Saltwater Creek. Besolved that a special rate be struck in the neighbourhood affected by such clearance, and to Ip considered at next meeting.— Besolved that © chains be formed by Peter’s and Doffoli’s.—Mr O. G, King waited Upon the Board, re clearance of Government drain. The Surveyor was instructed to call and accept tenders for same.—The pay-sheet, amounting to £164 12t, was examined and passed *br payment, being £144 12s for general District purposes, -’and £2O tor special works.—The Board then adjourned.
