Chas. Clark. TO INVESTORS, CAPITALISTS, SPECULATORS, MINING COMPANIES, AN] OTHERS. Important Sale of 3311 ACRES OF FREEHOLD, AGRICULTURAL PASTORAL, RUSH, AND MINERAL LANDS, Including tlio SOWAI COAL MINES, MALVERN DISTRICT ANDWAKAEPA, In tlxo Estate of ME I. R. SHEATH. MR CHARLES CLARK Ims been favoured with instructions from the Trustees in tut XhUte of Mr I. B. Sheath, to submit to PUBLIC AUCTION, At Ua Rooms, in Hereford street, Christchurch, THIS DAY. TUESDAY, NOV. 30, All that most valuable Freehold Estate, comprisiuK iu all 3311 acres of AgnomUimd, Pastoral, and Mineral Lands in the Malvern District. „ Those really valuable properties, now most oxcallently served by tbo railways just completed to Sheffield and Malvern, contain over ft largo surface, Coal, Ironstone, Five Clay, Pottery Clay, Ac., Ac. As regards tbo COAL, tbo shafts recently sunk have proved tbo seams to bo of groat thickness, and the qnalitv, after being practically tested, has ■proved to bo superior i o any yet found m Cantorfery, and according to tbo Provincid Geologists Report, “Can bo fairly compared with tbo best Coals of New South Wales.'’ , WikU aviow of iitVonliu£ a £ood oppovnuuty to tbo several applicants lor portions of this Estate, the Trustees nave decided to rnbmit tbo same to PUBLIC COMPETITION, On the dato above named, and in tbo Folk wing Order. . Lot I—ON THE KlVE.lt KOWAI, comprising rural sections Nos. 371- and 3713, containing 1713 Acres of really Good Agricultural and Pastoral Laud, with an excellent stream of water on same . Those sections are those Lauds formerly m part leased to the Kowai Coal Company, whoso success, as a Company, was only barred by tbo groat cost ot ©arringo by road of this Excellent coal, a coat which by reason ot tbo railway is now Reduced to a f cry low charge. , , , , . With Lot 1, will also bo included about 28 ACRES OP RUSH LAND, Part of Rural Sections, Nos. 1739 and 4SOo, both of which wore early and choice selections. The following is an abridgment of Dr mast s reports upon this coalfield, ns per “ General Government Gazette,” Sept. 23, Ihfio, and Report "of Geological txploration, 1872, ken at the instance of tbo Previnundertaken ...u cial and General Govocinvieur.a, unvneij ■ “Thirty foot above the river, whore the drives luxvo been put in, seven sonnis of coal liave boon exposed, from sovcu inches to three feet, four inches thick, and intersected with shalo to the extent of over thirty-four feetand as this investigation, undertaken on behalf of the Provincial Government, has shown that wo have hero only tbo outcropping end or edge of the coal basin, it would be unwise to begin to work the coal at such a spot, because tiio seams are not of that regularity which wc may expect to tind more towards the centre of the basin, and if the coal-bearing strata shew such a well-developed character, there can bo no doubt that by boring in the direction indicated, we may meet with larger seams of Coal regularly striking and dipping at a much smaller and in ore workable angle, and as this Coalfield is ot importance not only to Christchurch alone, but to the whole of New Zealand, the expense of thoroughly eißeieni borings could not bo considered lost even if the results did not answer our just expectations. The Coal has been practically tested, and its value for steam and forging purposes fully proved. {See Analysis Reports of Geo. Explorations by Dr Hector. 1871-2.) Dr Hf.ast further states, at p. 113 of the Geo. Reports, 1871, in reference to the Kowai dual Mines, as follows, namely" In the year 1861,1 made a minute examination of that locality, in which I was materially assisted by the excavation of several drives. The results were embodied in a report addressed to the Provincial Government of Canterbury, I cannot add anything to that report, and must still recommend that borings should be undertaken towards tbe centre of the Rat in order to test tbe real value of the ground, as I think it most probable that good workable seams of altered coal will be reached more towards the centre of tbe fiat country.” Dr Hector also states in same reports, p. 5-, that “iu addition to the localities referred to as yielding Coal in this very interesting district, several others have been described by Dr Hanst; one of these, on the Kowai River, is very accessible, and the Coal of good quality.” The vendors have, therefore, every confide nee in recommending this Valuable Estate to tbo favourable notice of intending purchasers, as they have reason to believe when Dr Haast's suggestions are earned out, that vast coal-bearing and other valuable mineral strata will be found to underlie tbe whole of tbo property, representing a large amount of wealth, which may be successfully developed in the bands of capitalists or a mining and agricultural company. J.B.—Should this property not be sold as a ole. it will be offered in 20 LOTS, A 3 PEE PLAN. Lot 2— ON THE HAWKINS, comprising rural sections Nos. 3713 and 7052 of 310 acres, together with about 14 acres of BUSH LARD on the Kowai. This Property is leased to Mr Jebson, upon very good terms for any Investor, both as reravda the yearly rent and tbo Royalty upon all tbe coal raised; fuh particulars of which can bo ascertained on inquiry.
