The reported arrival of the Californian mails, on May 4, was falie. The steamship Schiller, homeward' bound from New York, with the Australian and New Zealand mails, viA San Francisco, and over 260 passengers, was totally wrecked- off the Soilly Isles, ’ Only a few passengers were eared. . The Berlin Post considers that the recent Belgian note in reply to Germany is meaningless and unsatisfactory. Mr Vogel’s health is very precarious. A medical consultation decided that a course p£ German baths is indispensable. Ur Vogel cannot return to New Zealand before September, The April exports from Britain show an increase on pterions months. Wheat* is depressed. Metals lore unchanged. The competition at the wool sales is unabated. Foreign buyers,' especially French, are operating keenly ; buyers being eager to supply the immediate requirements of the trade. . ■ - May 10.' , The Schiller went ashore daring a. fog. Three hundred and eleven perished. Fortyfour, and a portion of the mails were saved. The Emperor of Russia arrived at Berlin to-day.' The result of the interview with the German Emperor is anxiously awaited. ,The Italian Parliament has been engaged during the week in discussing a motion blaming the Government for undue leniency towards the bishops, and allowing the law of exequatur to remain a dead letter. Menghetti promised’ to introduce legislation to protect the State and administer ecclesiastical property. It was also stated that relations with Germany were excellent. A vote of-confi-dence in the Government was passed.
Bourke has announced that the Government received an entirely satisfactory assurance from Germany, an l that there is no cause to apprehend a disturbance. The Brindisi mails were delivered yesterday.
The passengers by the Schiller were pm* oipally Germans ; no Australians are traceable. Fifty-six mail bags, chiefly newspapers, are saved. The colliers’ strike in South .Wales has ended by the men returning to work on the masters’ conditions. , The Czar and Prince Gortschakoff interviewed Prince Bismarck immediately upon their arrival at Berlin. It is generally supposed that the Ozar will exercise a pacific inflames. Prussia has voted the suppression of religious orders.
