Ordered to be acknowledged, with thanks. . A litter was read, from Mr D. Campbell, Colonibo street south, asking the Council to sanction the continuation: of the side channel in course of formation past Vincent’s brewery to the boundary of Mr B. Deacon’s property on the north side. The request was granted on the usual terms. A letter was read from Mr E. Willis, St. Asaph street, complaining of a nuisance caused by Mr M'Cardell. . The Town Clerk stated that the letter had been referred to the Inspector. A letter was read from Mr Arthur Appleby, asking the Council to grant to the new boating dab the free use of a sufficient portion of the open ground between the hospital and Montreal street bridge for the erection of substantial boatsheds. The Town Clerk was instructed to makd inquiries in the matter. Me Mr Alport’s letter, the Inspector reported that Mesrs Harman: and Stevens, as agents for Lord Lyttelton and Captain Simmonds, declined to contribute towards the channelling of Manchester street, between Gloucester and Armagh streets. , , The Town Clerk was’ instructed to ‘inform Mr Alport that the work could Jbe donn only on the usual terms. •DEIVING BOUND COBNEES. Councillor Ick moved—That all previous resolutions on the above subject be rescinded. It was bis intention to move a resolution embracing three of the most prominent junctions in the city, namely, the Bank of New Zealand, comer of Colombo and Cashel streets, and High and Cashel streets,, on Monday evening next. The motion for rescinding previous resolutions wap agreed to. A letter was 'road from Mrs Zincgraf, applying for a remission of rates. ' The application was granted. I FINANCE. COMMITTEE: The Finance Committee' reported that they had made arrangeesents with the Bank of New Zealand I to. increase the overdraft on the general 'account to the amount of £3500, if required, before the time arrived to commence the collection of this year’s rates. They con? sidered it inadvisable to reduce the labour gang until the question was settled as to what grant the Council should receive from the Provincial Council. They, however, were of opinion that the men should be employed only in effecting the most necessary repairs to the streets and footpaths, as in the event of no grant being received, the Whole staff of work-: men would have to be discharged, seeing that, it would require the utmost diligence to collect sufficient rates to pay off the overdraft by Nov. 16 next, the end of the financial year.; The report #as received and adopted. batb-oolleotoe’s ebeoet. The rate-collector banded ih a return of the rates outstanding, which was about £25 less now than at the corresponding period of lost year, though the total amount of rates for that year was nearly £6OO less than this yew.'
