Lyttelton Wintbb Headings.— That these entertainments have not lost their prestige is very, evident, judging from the large attendance at the Colonists’ Hall on Friday night. Well knowing the difficulty the committee have in inducing persons to come forward, it would be unfair to criticise those who do so; still the committee might exercise a wise discretion in stipulating (hat the pieces to be read should not be too lengthy, and they might also endeavour to. make the acoustic properties of tbe building—which are most atrocious—..better. The first part of the entertainment consisted of readings by Messrs Bolt, Power, and Yule; pianoforte solos by Miss Hinefct and Mr Ford; and songs by Mrs Rich and Messrs Harrington and Oommeford; and the second part a faroe, " Done Brown," in which Messrs G. N. Phillips, Bolt, Ford, Jacobson, Wame,and Salt acquitted themselves remarkably well, and were loudly applauded at the "fall of the curtain. The chairman stated that: at the next entertainment: prises would be offered for recitations by youths in the town. Thbatbe Royal.— Colley Gibber’s aoting edition of Richard the Third, was presented at the theatre on Saturday night, and, despite the inclemency of the weather, the attendance was much larger than could have been expected under the circumstances. As the Queen, Mrs Bates gave further proof that the high reputation which preceded her as an actress was fully justified. To-night “Bait Lynne” will be presented, is which Mn Bates is said to be. very effective as Lady Isabel. The piece has always proved attractive to Christchurch playgoers, and there is no doubt (hat under the able direction of Mrs Bates, it will be presented this evening in a ' manner that will'give satisfaction to all who patronise the theatre. 1 Pafanui.— At a meeting of the District School Committee held on May 4; present all the members. It was resolved that the plans of Mr S. 0. Fur, for additions to the school be sent for the approval of the Board of Education. Mr Farr estimated tbe cost of (he additions at £385. No tenders for the palisade fencing and extension of school porch having been received, it was resolved that the estimate of (he post of the same, as prepared by Mr Godfrey, be accepted, and thathe be requested to cany out the works at the* price named. Mr John Gordon, a pupil teacher of the third year, was appointed pupil teacher for the school, subject to the approval of the Board. The Works committee were directed to see to the shingling of the paths leading to the ichool, and tbe planting of the fences, where necessary, with quicks. An entertainment committee, for organising entertainments during the .ensuing winter , season, was appointed, consisting of Messrs Harper, Brittan, Munro, Low, Dunnage, Elliot, Barlow, Morgan, Godfrey, Erase, and 0.0. Duncan. The first entertainment will take place on Friday next at half-past seven, at the new schoolroom. After transacting other business the meeting adjourned. ’ Lakeside School.— A meeting of the committee of this school .took, place at the school-house oh Wednesday evening last. There were present— Messrs Allan iBeU (in the chair), J, H. M'-Pbcreon, and J. M'Yinnie.
